George, if your tuned in here, apologies for the beaver comment, hope you are in good health. Checked your cp, and I'm impressed with your corvette history and experience. Wonder what your kids and grandkids (I'm assuming) think of their hotrodding dad and granddad?

Here's a picture of my '59 being used as a test car for an experimental fuel injection system in maybe 1960. The Clayton dyno was driven by the cars driveshaft; I've never seen (or even heard of) another like it.

The last time I rebuilt my 283, we broke it in on a Clayton chassis dyno (rear tires sit on two small rollers). We found that the only tires that would stand up to the punishment were Michelin. See rear tires on the '59. I wonder what Dyno Don used for rear tires on his chassis dyno!
When I was in College the Engineering Shops Technician claimed that the school's Clayton Chassis Dyno had never been pegged. When we learned his reasoning was due his experience with the tires slipping on the rollers, at something less that 200 horsepower, we bet him a free lunch that we could test the limits of the dyno. He agreed. I was running 280 durometer L60 retreads on my GTO, and before he realized the car was not a plain-Jane LeMans or Tempest we ran the car to the flywheel limit on the dyno. We did not have much tire smoke, but the resulting mist cloud from the cooling tower had the neighbor Department Heads calling in complaints to the ME Department Chair. Even though we won the bet, Bob (the Shops Technician) got his free lunch. The ME Department Chair bought all of us lunch. We learned later that neighbor departments were improperly storing their "stuff" in the ME lock up yard (next to the cooling tower). The mist cloud incident motivated a yard cleanup (a win-win for the ME Department other than the phone calls and meetings).
The capacity and instrumentation of modern chassis dynos is incredible compared to what we used. I wonder if Nicholson even used a chassis dyno, considering the limitations of the 60's vintage equipment (maybe his efforts were all on an engine dyno)?
Since I mentioned College, I have to brag that my alma mater is the National Division 2 Basketball champs... great job for the Cal Poly Pomona Basketball team!

I have not specifically researched Clayton Chassis dynos but I would not be surprised if they have more than one model. Although I have read numerous references to Nicholson and his chassis dyno and of course Earl Wade who was his right hand man still lives in So Cal I believe and would know firsthand. Maybe Bert Brown can ask Earl sometime on the specifics of the chassis dyno. One reference I have read is that Nicholson's chassis dyno was a WWII surplus dyno they had used with army tanks. If that is the case then we may be comparing apples to oranges.-Jim

These are pics of my 63 roadster taken in 1969. First on the Coronado Ferry in San Diego, taken the day I left the Navy (after 5 years) and started the journey home. The second was taken at a rest stop near St Louis during the trip. I had the car body repainted '67 Lynndale Blue the year before, after the original silver blue paint oxidized sitting out in the Texas sun in 1964/5, and substituted later wheel covers.
I had sent a trunk home, and the car contained the rest of my worldly goods.

Yes, its an 579E airbox big brake vette. My dad bought the car in 1964 in Big Springs texas while in the airforce. Originally polo white/silver red interior very rare power top just for weight over rear wheels, was a race car in new mexico. The picture of him standing by the car when it was green was the day he got out of the airforce he jumped in the (radio and heater delete) corvette and drove from Texas to Pennsylvania in that car said he could barely walk after he got home. He painted the car three times Blue, Green and finally Red before it was returned to Polo white. The 62 was my uncles it was a Fawn on Fawn 327-340hp 4spd had 1962 impala accessory wire wheel covers on it in the one picture. He sold the 1962 in 1972 when he had a family. My Uncle tried to trade the corvette on a chevy kingswood estate wagon at the local chevy dealer but didnt want it. The dealer claimed they had enough corvettes sitting around and couldnt sell it because of the gas crunch. We are trying to find that car but havent had any luck as of yet!!! Here is a picture of the 57 as it sits today!!!
