Anything that could ever be said or written on the topic has been covered here 200 times or more... The first 'sticky' thread at the top of the forum page called Flat Tappet Oils covers the area in depth...

This will open a can of worms about ZDP in automotive lube oils:

Some of the newer guys might find interesting.....but I would re-post in the STICKY above.

This should definitely be posted to the sticky thread. As far as I am concerned, there is much misinformation there and there should be as many resources posted in that thread as possible. Those who are truly concerned/interested can do their research accordingly.

Nick,
I am presently running Chevron Delo LE 15W-40. I see no issue in using this oil. I'm an STLE member and a mechanical engineer by profession. Even though the current CJ-4 specs have reduced the phosphorous content over the prior CI-4 and CI-4 PLUS categories, the anti-wear package content is still greater than that of spark ignition oils for the past 15 years and greater or equivalent to the content of the motor oils that were available when 1967 Corvettes were brand new.
For break in, you will need an added supplement or very high anti-wear content oil for flat tappet cams. But for a 10 year old build like mine, CJ-4 Chevron or Shell Rotella is fine.
That said, I have purchased 10W-40 Amsoil AMO and will probably switch to that on the next oil change just because it is full synthetic and does have slightly higher phosphorous content than the CJ-4 Chevron Delo LE.

Comp Cams has a new break-in oil PN 1590/quart PN 1590-12/case. It has all the government regulated maximum amounts of zinc/phosphorous/molybdenum/detergents in a high grade base oil. Worth checking out. Charley

most everyone around here uses a product from GM called EOS, it has the necessary additives to make any shelf oil useful for a flat tappet engine, i just add it to my oil changes along with Castrol GTX 10-40 .. Rob

Nice read from an engineer with credentials but actual experience in the field proves otherwise. Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association has issued bulletins on this after huge amount of complaints from member shops. A man with an experience beats a man with an argument as they say.

I am using Mobil 1 on my MB SL and 911 turbo but when i am changing the oil on my Corvette i look for a oil with much zink.
There seems to be more zink in the oil for diesel cars here in Europe

I see a lot of discussion on oil- but what about the present gasoline with 10% ethanol (and
soon 20%)? Some say that these will harm the engines in older, classic cars if left in the tank for more than 2-3 weeks, and which is OK for daily driven cars, but what if you store your Corvette for winter? They do caution against using it in boat motors, use marine gas which doesn't have ethanol in it.
