Default Gear oil

Can anyone tell me if say 75W-90 synthetic gear oil has that strong petroleum smell like the old non synthetics? I would think a synthetic would have little or no odor.

Thanks

Lowell:

I would guess that the smell is from the additives rather than the oil molecule itself. Both synthetic and non-synthetic lubricants should have similar wear and oxidation additives.

It smells the same. Just sniffed Mobil 1 75-90 and Valvoline dino. All smelled the same. Dennis
