Default 1961 270HP oil pan

Did these normally have a windage tray installed ?

How do you tell an original pan...I've seen some with 'finger' depressions on each side and some smooth ?
Any difference between base HP pans and others ?

A few pics of an original would be much appreciated.

Wow - Just checked mine out and its identical to the one in the pic externally but dinged all to heck. How hard are these to bang back into shape once they are off the car ?

I'd have to take it some where as I don't have the hammers and body dollys to tackle it.

Frank, I took my original '59 pan to my body shop guy last weekend along with some pictures showing what the profile should look like. Keeping my fingers crossed. I will let you know.

Please do. There are NO original pans around for any decent price...and the only NOS I've seen is on eBay headed North of $800....

The one on the left looks like it has 3 side ribs at least on the left side, the one on the right looks like 1. I usually go by the number of ribs. Like Frank said, spot welds, from the outside, would be difficult to see, but not the ribs.

My '61 has one vertical rib on each side; it has a small vertical dent on the rounded edge behind the drain plug and the whole area around the drain plug is sorta 'pushed up' slightly.
Figure when I take it off someday....I'll see if its original and try to get it banged back into shape.

I have a fairly valuable (to me) 396 pan that was involved in a crash. The pan was bent up pretty bad and all the wrinkles couldn't be worked out so a couple pounds of lead body solder took care of that little problem.

Yup! I thought about lead or something similar if the one really bad ding I have requires it....

Saw one that was bondo'd, and it lasted. Not recommending it, but it did work..........

Think lead is a far better idea, if massaging with a hammer & dolly does not fix it completely.
