2021 C1 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
2017 C2 of Year Finalist
This work completed sometime in the '60's and somewhere in SoCal. Owner I purchased the car from in 1970 said he tried everything to get the car to stock height. Replaced front springs and no difference. Then he cleaned up the spindles to change the pins and noticed they had been welded. As I recall, he said the spindles had been cut, reversed and welded which accounts for the height. Leaf springs have been dearched a bit as well. Tires are 215/75/15 radials. We get a ton of compliments on the car and many say they really like the stance... that is, from those that seem to be aware. Car originally came with Anson 5 spoke mags mounted with Miller tires. Still have these too along with the spare which had a Goodyear mounted and it never held air, the Millers however, still have air in them from the 60's. DJ.

Lowering a C1
Thanks Tom but they didn't have them. Do I just use two or for some unknown reason go to an earlier year for the left and the later year for the right? These are exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, Grant

I'm not familiar with Vintage racing regulations on use of oem parts or acceptable modifications, and unless the inspectors search for oem part numbers on the pieces, it seems you could cut and re-weld your C1 uprights to drop the height an inch or two up front ..like DanielJ's car above. While these would be viewed as "modified" C1 uprights, they would only be viewed as "repaired" 53-54 Chevy uprights (retaining original 53-54 chevy suspension pickup points)
I had a set of NOS 53-54 uprights laying around somewhere, but they were a rare find even several years ago.

Happy Days ..........just located a pair of these 53 54 passenger car spindle supports and it seems it wasn't that difficult. Will make sure I get relevant measurements before I commit to purchase incase they are earlier supports. Does anyone know what the part numbers are for the 53-54 passenger car and the exact distance from under the lower knuckle (or top of the lower knuckle) to the lower face of the spindle support boss? Tom, feel free to chime in at any time.

Thanks. Below is the specs on wheels and tires as shown in the above photo.
The car sat so low that I was always worried about road clearance. So I ended up getting 18" diameter wheels and tires that were taller that increased the road clearance by 1-1/8". Here is how it looks now.

The car looks even better with the hardtop. Did the rear wheels and tires fit using the stock rear end?

Lowering the '62
Hello Fastback,
About 15 years ago, I actually cut a coil out of the front spring. I know it's not the correct way to lower the vehicke, but at the time it's what I could afford.
Also, I took the rear springs in and had them "de-arched" at Sacramento Spring.
Now I'm used to it and just haven't changed the springs out. Recently, I put on front disc brakes, cleaned all suspension components and put the springs right back in there.

2023 C1 of the Year Finalist - Modified
2015 C1 of the Year Finalist
At one time (of course, years ago), the 49-54 Chevys were all over the place for spare parts pickin'. But not so much anymore. The easiest way to achieve a slight drop up front is to go with the 53-54 front spindle supports (AND THEY RARE LEFT AND RIGHT!!!). To return to a stock front height, the 49-52 pass car supports are the same as 53-62 Vette.
For me, a lowered stance is fine for looks, but NOT for practicality--------------------ESPECIALLY IF THE CAR IS FREQUENTLY DRIVEN, and driven on long trips. You never know what kind of road surface irregularities may be encountered, so I have found it best to stay with a stock height. Also, going up/down and turning into/out of driveways can be hazardous to the undercarriage sometimes. Nope, lowered is not for me because I frequently drive the 56. In fact, I'll be driving from OKC to Phoenix next week in the 56 pulling the little trailer.
