Default after market carbi

Hi all, wanted to know what was the best cfm size carbi for a 283cu. It is not a matching numbers car and I don't have the original carbi anyway. So should I go with a Edelbrock / Carter AFB or a holley? Did some research and looks like a 500cfm Carter is probably the best option. If you have put an after market carbi on and either thought it was great or bad let me know or if you have a justifiable cfm recommendation.

if the carter will fit without an adapter choose it over the edelbrock....if you think you will be doing a lot of custom tuning, go with a holley....whatever pic do not go over 600-650 cfm, the 500-550 will work great...good luck..jmo....

The carb size as suggested is just right. The Carter is the same as the Edelbrock. I don't think Carter is made anymore, but rebuilt/used ones can be bought at Carbs Unlimited. The Edelbrock is available at many sources and will be brand new. Check your manifold bolt spread measurement and make sure it fits the Edelbrock. Edelbrock #1403 is 500CFM w/electric choke at about $309. Not knowing what intake you have now, you might have to change to a later GM intake with a square bore mount, or get an Edelbrock 2101. Others here on the CF may have additional thoughts. Dennis

Have done a bit more research! Does anyone have a Edelbrock 1403 or 18014 AVS (both 500CFM fitted to their 283 and if so what elso did you need to get to make it fit - manifold - linkages? And were/are you happy with it?

mickatbp,

I have a 59 with a stock 283 in it. The original carbs were the 2 x 4 setup that I am currently restoring. However, I put on a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb with a manual choke on a 63 Corvette aluminum manifold that a friend sold me and the car ran fine. To use a stock air cleaner, I had to change to a 64-65 Corvette Carter 3721 SB AFB carburetor that I purchased off of ebay. I did some fine tuning to the carb by richening up the jets two sizes and using skinnier metering rods and the car runs great. I richened the carb to accommodate the blended or "oxygenated" fuels that are being sold at the D/FW gas stations. Either carb will work fine for your application, but be aware that the Carter AFB WILL accommodate the stock factory air cleaner of a C1, the Edelbrock won't.

Good Luck, Mark

Good Luck, Mark
not only that but the edel brock only comes with a hokey fuel line connection that usually involves flexible fuel lines running along the top of the engine above the exhaust manifold.

The edelbrock tech rep claims the Carter air horn with front fuel line entry and smaller air cleaner size will swap onto their afb, but I haven't seen or heard of one done that way.

PS if anyone has an old edelbrock throttle body that they want to send me, I'l try to fit a Carter air horn on it and see how it performs in place of the Carter that I use on my 66.

I beleive the edlbrock 1405 or 1406 carbs are both 600cfm carbs the 1406 is jetted for economy and has an electric choke, the 1405 is set-up for performance and is a maunual choke. I read a post a year or two back about putting the top/upper section of an carter/afb carb, (3721 series 1964-65) onto the edelbrock 1405/1406. This would put the fuel line back in front of the carb. This is a modification I'm thinking about trying.

What intake manifold do you have (casting number)?

This will change things a bit, I hadn't taken much notice of the engine while I was doing other resto things (other than collecting a few parts that are visibly wrong) but it turns out it is a 327cu (3782870) but I have sourced a 283 intake manifold - (3746829), some time ago - hasn't arrived yet. Will the 283 manifold fit the 327 and will a 1406 Edelbrock fit the 283 manifold? I don't like the current 327 manifold fitted as it looks period incorrect hence the 283 manifold.

The Eldebrock Performer I have has a dual bolt pattern. I believe it will fit the square bore and the spread bore manifolds. It was bolted to a 461 intake manifold. It has a plastic adapter ring that allows the use of the 1965 chrome 350 horsepower air cleaner assembly.
It also has been fitted with steel fuel line to fuel filter.

Okay 68rdstr, what is the number of the carbi in the photo, is it a 9636?? (carter 1406) - 650cfm?? - Are you saying the carbi you have is for sale?

Is a 500cfm still big enough for a 327??

That 6829 intake will fit the 327 just fine, but it will only accept a Carter WCFB carburetor.

I can't check it out right now because it's in Florida and I'm in Tennessee.
I think it is the 1406 style. It is listed on ebay for sale.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...STRK:MESELX:IT
