Default Muncie

Over the last couple of years, I’ve scrounged a muncie main case (3851325), tail (3846429), and side cover (3831707) with the intention of having a correct tranny built for my 65 vette someday. Currently, it has a T-10. If it doesn't cost an arm & leg, the day may be near. Can you recommend a vendor?

Thanks,

Bill

You don't want the 429 tailhousing - it was only used in '63-'64; the 3857584 tailhousing (passenger side speedo) is correct for a '65.

The car assembly date is Nov 10, 1964. Would the tailhousing I have still be incorrect?

Ed Hartnett in Lansdowne, Pa does an EXCELLENT job with Muncies.
He did my '65 trans over the winter and he's also done a lot of trans for other people i know and I've never heard anything other than very positive feedback from his work.

A bit closer to you is also someone in the Virginia Beach area.

Mike comes VERY highly recommended from a long-time NCRS member whose knowledge and recommendations on service on classic vettes is one I trust well

There seems to be a fair amount of debate/discussion about early(429)/(584) late Muncie tail housings for 1965.
Some say the early 65 model Muncies got the 429 tail housing and some say ALL 65 model Muncies had the 684 tail housing.
So far as I know, there has not been a solid resolution to this issue.

And, as additional information (NON-Corvette), SOME cars, such as the Pont GTO did continue to have Muncies until about 1970 with the 429 tail housing (with driver side speedo fitting).

I have a built, vintage transmission made up of 3851325, 3846429 and 3831707. Stamped 5k110230. I'm not sure if it has ever been rebuilt or not. I can post pictures if it's helpful.

John -- what's it gonna take to drive a stake thru the heart of this 429 vs. 584 early '65 zombie ?

Chevrolet New Product manual, Training Program Booklet: published July 1964. (same repeats in the Sept 1964 issue of Chevrolet Service News):

""The Chevrolet four-speed transmission extension housing and main shaft are revised to provide for a right-hand speedometer take-off connection ...... (repeats in another paragraph) The Chevelle, Chevy II, and the Corvette ... four speed transmissions have revised extension housings (also) for the right-hand speedometer drive location.""

It's all Colvin's fault.

It'll probably take at least as long as killing the old exhaust system "mitting" myth, and that took about ten years.

It's a mythical process that never existed for blacking-out pipes and mufflers at St. Louis.

It is an early 65 Chevelle vin on this 65 Muncie with a 429 tail housing. Fuel for the controversy?
