what did they do? pour water or corn syrup or something in the crankcase in order to seize the engine up?

Default Hard to believe, but...

there's actually a product called "Engine Seize" that is a suspension of fine silicates, designed to permanently seize up the motor.
There was a photo of the jug in our local rag this morning.

The dealers, however, are waiting to get payment assurance from the Gubment before they euthanize these perfectly good vehicles that many people would love to own for work transportation.

It was motor oil without the ZDDP additive - that'll destroy an engine every time...

There will be plenty of C4s around for anybody who wants one for years to come. And the fiberglass body makes 'Vettes uneconomical for crushing, so the car in the video will most likely be parted out or even recycled with a new engine once it gets to the salvage yard.

If they got $4500 for it then it was a pretty good deal! It was just a C-4!

I have to imagine the owner could have gotten more parting it out. Some cars make sense to trade in on this deal, others do not. I have to think it is just laziness on someones part. I'd sell it off for more than $4500 in parts and use the extra cash to lower payments on a new vehicle. But, I guess some people don't have the time, the place or experience to part out a car...

I don't know how it qualified for cash for clunker progarm. I owned 2 C-4's , they both got 24 and 25 mpg ! I thought the standard was 18 ? There are a few ratty C-4's for sale cheap.

It's based on combined EPA average mileage. I get ~25 mpg cruising on the freeway in my '91. No way I get that combined.

At least the program is not providing bankers that lose money with huge bonuses. The new car lots around here are pretty empty of new cars so it's putting people back to work or at least keeping a few more off un-employment. If they are working, they are paying taxes and not draining un-employment funds so I think it's one of the govt's better programs during all this.

Found an interesting mileage site:
http://www.mpgomatic.com/2007/10/10/...age-1979-2007/

Clunker Rules:
# Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
# Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG

C4 barely meets the rule at 17MPG
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/CarsCat3OrOther.shtml

1985 Chevrolet Corvette
Fuel Type Regular
Engine Size 5.7 L
Cylinders 8
Transmission Automatic 4-spd
Drive Rear-Wheel Drive
Options (350 V8) (FFS)
Vehicle Category Passenger Car
Combined MPG 17
Qualifies for CARS? Yes. You may qualify for the CARS program.

Unfortunately a new Vette does not qualify as the combined milage is only 19 according to the govt site.

What's really disturbing is that one intent of the program is to cut emissions.

Did you see how much smoke the '86 belched on it's death bed? If the intent is to destroy the engine, they should have just crack the block with a BFH/crusher. Someone should send that in to EPA/CARB.

In fact, I just did send that in to ABC News.

I had to stop watching after about 30 seconds. I can't believe we Americans have elected the sorry government officials we have in control.
We have to take some of the responsibility for the over all ignorance of what happened in that video.

Probably a disgruntled person in a divorce and decided to get back at that person and did it this way....

Sad any way you look at it....
