NHRA World Champion Drag Car Discovered
A friend of mine just bought the 1966 NHRA World Champion Street Eliminator 58 Corvette. He hasn't slept since.
Should be a neat restoration.
Regards.

Didn't we just see a thread on here within the past week linking to an e-bay auction for that car?
I couldn't find the forum thread, but I found the e-bay listing

John, I agree it was a great buy. Wish I could have found a way myself to bring it home from New Mexico. I have been on a bit of a spending spree lately and had just bought another drag car off of ebay a couple of weeks before and my cookie jar was a little short of funds. He got it for a good price. A great piece with pretty decent history.
Hopefully by restoration you mean back to the way it raced as opposed to how it left the factory.-Jim

I wonder why holes were cut in the trunk area on either side of the wheel well? Just curious.

I love the way people tailor ads to their situation, "ugly original chrome trim on trunk" because they're missing, becomes "rare and much sought after chrome trunk irons" if they were there.

John,
If I'm not mistaken, he has altered the wheelbase in that last photo. Does your friend have the car in his possession to measure?
Have fun. I've enjoyed my car for the last 40 years. Good to see the drag cars are finally getting recognized!

Great question. IMO based on what I have heard and have seen the wheelbase has not been altered. From a objective basis since you have raised the question, I believe it will be checked out during restoration and in conversation with the original owner (the race driver).
I have seen the car it needs a full restoration but is in great shape.

The wheelbase looks pretty stock to me but maybe the angle of the picture makes it look different to Bert. If you look at the pics that were on ebay that Olds rear is one stout unit. The spacers between the front suspension and the frame appear to be at least 3" if not 4" which was pretty common back in the day.
The great thing about this car is that it has the Olds (or Pontiac rear) and the front spacers which was not at all uncommon for these cars back in 65 and 66. Hopefully we will run across some pictures of this car in competition.-Jim

I know a guy who has a red C1 that has the rear moved forward 1" and the front moved forward 2" and no one has ever noticed.

That seems familiar some how.
