Knock off -spare tire
I currently have knock off wheel on my 64 coupe. But my spare tire is a steel wheel. I was thinking of pick up a used knock to use as my spare, but someone told me it my not fit in the spare tire tub. Any truth to this? Thanks.

The aluminum wheel is 1/2 inch wider. If you have a stock tire on it, the carcass will be only 1/5 inch wider. I don't think my steel wheel-mounted spare is THAT tight a fit.
Source: B.F. Goodrich tech publication, each half-inch increase in wheel width causes a mounted tire to stretch approximately 0.2 inches wider.

Kind of a pain in the a** to do. The person who had the car before me did not like to use the anti-theft pins. Instead, he taped the holes for a long set screw. I guess he thought a set screw would be less likely to come out. I do not want to re-start the comments regarding knock -off wheel and the anti-theft pins, but if you think its hard lining up the hole for a pin, try it for a set screw. I'm not in an hurry to get a used knock off for a spare, but I was curious about the answer to my original question.

The wheel isn't the issue - the tire is what causes the spare tire/wheel not to fit in an original tub. If your current spare tire/wheel fits in the tub, the same tire on a KO wheel will also fit. Original KO wheel cars had unique (longer) front tray hanger bolts due to the 1/2"-wider rim - you may need them in order to have the tray fit flush to the tub.

You will need longer bolts that the cover swings on.

my tub (65, looks to be a repro tub) has a KO with a radial goldline tire in it right now.
As far as the three hanger bolts, they come in three lengths: std, KO, and (the longest) Goldline. I have the Goldline length; and if you are running a modern radial tire of typical width, the tub lid will not sit flush against the tub itself; the same would have been true of a 65 vette delivered with Goldline tires back in 1965 - the longer hanger bolts allow the lid to sit an inch or so beneath the tub.
The biggest fitment problem (one that cannot be solved with longer bolts) seems to happen with original tubs when slightly larger (diameter) tires are used - such as the sizes we all seem to run these days. The tire simply won't fit within the tub as the diameter prevents it.
