My dad started this thread in March of 2009. He passed away in Feb of 2010. He was my best buddy and teacher of many things to me. I miss him in some way each and every day. I can't even convey the joy this thread gave me. I stumbled upon it and all of your stories just brought a smile to my face. It's amazing what some retards THINK they know. Read this thread from start to finish, you'll be laughing come the end.

Yep, remember them and even had one. And that's precisely why I'm building a 406 for my 65...just to mess with peoples minds. Even considering going the route of 3 deuces too!

And in keeping with the spirit of this thread, you wouldn't believe how many times I was told Ford either never made a 406 or that there was no such thing as a Tri-power. And that was in 1966-67....not some 40 years later!

Sorry to hear about your dad, It is funny what people think about our cars and how much more they know then we do about them.

When I was driving My 03 Red Convertible to work daily, I overheard one of the office cleaning ladies tell another that I drove a Ferrari.

I get the fiberglass one all the time.

I once had a kid try to convince me that his Berlinetta Camaro with the SS hood was a real SS.......

Oddest one I ever ran in to was a class mate of mine from college came into a bar one night while I was having a cocktail. We started to talk and he asked me if I still had my vette. I told him that I did. He then proceeded to inform me that he just inherited a 54 Corvette with the original "V/6" engine in it. Didn't have the heart to tell him that was a very distinct impossibility as the V/6 hadn't even come into production at that point in time. I did tell him to hold on to it as it was one of the very rare 54's.......................

I had this guy tell me he had a friend that had a 57 vette with the original 409 in it,you see all kinds one told me he would buy a vette but they were very dangerous with all that fiber glass would cut you pretty bad if you had a accident, they don't have a clue and they all have an uncle that had one with some special crap which never existed,Or they would ask how much did you give for that split window or how much would you take for it and I would tell them it is not for sale, and the reply is every thing is for sale. I have got to the point that I don't want to go to a car show. I have a friend that owns corvette world in Greenville SC and he brought some cars to Knoxville TN and he put a large sign that said I don't give a damn what your uncle had and I don't want to hear it I thought it was funny.

You know...........I have had people tell me all kinds of crap about what they know. I used to try and argue with them but now it doesn't even bother me. I think it just all stems for the basic need of having to know something. Even if they don't.

I have owned my own automotive repair shop since I was 22, I have had hundreds of people explain to me all kinds of incorrect things, Like how they used to rebuild Muncie 4 speeds in their 61 Impala, or how they swapped out the cluster gear in their overdrive transmission in 15 minutes without even pulling the transmission out of the car sometimes.

What's the first year of the fiberglass ones? Standing at the back of my 66 at the gas station, filling it up, when someone walks up to the back of the car and asks "is that a split window?" Or "is that a 63 Vette?"

We have all heard it all. It really shouldn't even bother us anymore. I usually just agree with the people who want to argue and answer the questions of people who really want to know the answer.

I'll have to say the most creative comment that I've heard on my '61 was when some 20-something kid asked me if that big chrome **** under the dash (the one on the lever to open the cowl vent) was to 'kick in the nitrous'.

I told him no and he obviously didn't believe me until I crawled in the cockpit and opened up the cowl vent with the ****. Have to admit - that was a new one on me.

On the bright side, a young car guy had an interest in one of the classics.

I love all of the information I get at the car shows, sure is fun to see how far you can set them out there before they realize damn I sound dumb.

I'm building a 396 small block using the 870 block and all of the other "correct" parts and cant wait for all of the-that aint a 396 comments.
