Any Ideas for a '63-'65 Fuelie Air Cleaner.
I don't have the original Fuel Injection Air Cleaner for my car and was wondering if anyone has come up with something that works and looks OK. I do want to use the cold air induction connection from the core support. I have seen a few square box type air cleaners and was wondering if anyone has come up with anything. I really wasn't interested in spending $1000. for an original, for my car is not a high point NCRS example. I put a lot of miles on my '63 and sure plan the same for the '65. The '65 is a Coupe and it's something I can drive this time of the year! Thanks, Lou

I didnt have the tube assembly on mine when I bought it, just a conical k&n filter attached to the FI outlet adapter. I havent found anything cheaper than $850 so far for original or repo stuff! I read that the original design using the hole in the rad support isnt very good for breathing air though.

...i have seen very nicely made small chrome air cleaners that are secured to the air meter but have no idea who sells them, when i saw that (carlisle?), it looked like an air cleaner setup off a tripower or something similar....
..for now, i plan to use a pretty ugly fram that has been customized to seal on the sheet metal downturn coming off the airmeter..the guy who had it before me secured a 1/4x20 rod to what looks like thick coat hanger wire and that holds the air filter in place - looks like hell so i may just bite the bullet and go for the stock setup unless somebody here comes up with good ideas

I have seen a lot of FI's set up with the 57 style cleaner. I think you can get everything you need at the local auto parts store for around $20. I got one for my 62, but got an original style cleaner before I got around to installing it. You have to extend the rod that holds the ac adapter to the air meter. I got a 1/4" coupling and some threaded rod that I was going to use. I never did actually put it on to see how it worked, but just looking at all the parts it looked like it would do fine.
You loose the advantage of feeding cold air to the engine, but on the other hand, you have to remove the ac to do much of anything on the left side of the engine. This can be a PITA. :D

lou,
I saw your post and had to respond. I am looking for an original 63 fi setup for my ride (i currently have a metal/fiberglass repro on mine). The repro looks great - but is not original. If you can point me in the 1000.00 air cleaner setup direction - i will gladly sell you my setup for a prayer. I have not been able to locate an original setup for less than 2000.00

I thought $1000 was a little on thelow side myself. I knew a guy up in Bristol Ct. who had one for $1600.00 and that was at least 10 years ago. I still lived in Ct. at the time and I saw the unit. Indeed it was perfect but the prices on that FI stuff....wow.

They have doubled this past year to 2,700 reproduction or real. Get the hose and invent something.I went to Auto-Zone with my hose and opened up some boxes. And yes, I want a real one,but not in dog dollars.

Check with a cold air intake manufacturer called PRM. They make a round, black plastic housing that contains a round, cone shaped K&N type filter. They can also sell you silicone hose to finish the connections. The guy I talked to said they had done several custom filters for around $175. http://www.prmracing.com

Here are some pics of the adapter I made for a K&N cone filter. Works Great!
If it looks like something that would work for you let me know and I can tell you how I made it. :smash:

HI, Your '61 Unit looks real nice. Thanks for your pictures.
Please let me know the details on what they get for the element and what you did for your adaptor. I really wanted to use the cold air induction; but what you did looks great.
Thanks, Lou

I really like it it adds a high tech look to the old workhorse.
A suggestion you might consider. Take a trip to a big Street Rod meet. Those guys come up with some really innovative stuff. I am not sure you will see the old style FI like your car has but you might get some ideas from what the Streeters are doing to some of the TPI cars.
My neighbor is really into Street Rods and in going to shows with him I have seen a few things that I incorporated into my cars. as long as your not hung up on original parts, which you obviously are not, there are some really creative folks out there doing Street Rods.

If you want to use the cold air inlet and not spend boookooo bucks on an original air cleaner, then investigate the PRM filter. It has a similar look (with the decal removed, of course) as the original and contains a modern high flow element. It's what I'm going to do with my 64 FI unit. My L76 C60 vette didn't have FI to begin with, so originality is out the door, functionality is in!!

Re: Any Ideas for a '63-'65 Fuelie Air Cleaner. (63FI)
The filter I used was a K&N RU2800 ($58.00 from NAPA) It is real important to use a good quality low restriction air filter with the FI.
To make the adapter I took (do I dare reveal this) a 4" 45degree PVC drain pipe elbow  and sawed it at the angle I needed and then machined the cut off end to just fit inside the air meter inlet adapter and bonded it on with epoxy. :smash: :smash: A little clean up and paint and thats all there is to it. Low tech and low buck but looks and works great.

Might be tough to beat the PVC pipe!
I have soo much respect for things like that which turn out ok and look good to. Makes ya just wnat to stand back, crack open a beer and pat yourself on the back. Every time I pull something like that off I just smile to myself.
