Think about the most $$$ you are willing to spend for the docs.
Offer this to him and tell him no one else will offer him that much (because it's true). It's a two way street, you need them but no one else would give him more than you would, so once you make that clear to him the ball is in his court and you are in the drivers seat now. If he still says no then tell him he has 24 hours to change his mind and not to bother contacting you after that.
If he wants to cut off his nose to spite his face, oh well...

I hope it works out for you.

Just tell him to hold onto it. Maybe when you sell the car, you can direct the new owner to the jerk dealer.

What a Jackass (was going to say assh**e)!! No doubt its worth something, Depends on how bad you want it? Not saying I agree with his asking price but as others have said is useless to him at this point. Why do past owners do this crap (to make money I guess), still not right INMHO.

If you do fold and pay his price, do us all a favor and don't tell anyone. I for one would think you are foolish if you do. The guy is trying to rob you without a gun.

I like Brett's thoughts. That might make him think he has to hold on for a looong time. I know what I would like to say to him, but then again he has something you will covet. You are in a real pinch. Have you seen and verified the docs? It's only a matter of time when someone repo's a POP, adds it to some '67 4 door Belair papers, and voila. As I sit here I am changing my mind back and forth. You, and ONLY you need this. If I saw this at a well known Corvette event, I wouldn't pay over $1000, and that would be for the sake of novelty. He doesn't have $10k worth of docs, in my opinion. But, he possibly has $2500 worth. Offer a Grand, and hope for the best. Good Luck, and keep us informed. Do you think he is reading these posts? Interesting......

I have copies of all the titles ever issued on my car. i would pay $25-30 for ALL the original glove box items if it were offered to me.

I must be a cheap SOB because I was thinking $500 when I read your post, then others were more double my thoughts. Oh well, leave him your name so he can put you in his will because he sounds like he is close to dying if he was a dealer back in the 80's.

Interesting subject....

I recently saw about a month or so ago some doc's (1967?) sell on ebay for about $1200. I would guess they sold to someone without the corresponding car.

I have been trying to bite my tounge, because I am in the same boat as you.I've reciecntly found that my orig. paperwork is out there. But what is it worth? I had to borrow money to buy the car of my dreams, and will have to scramble to to come up with more cash to pay for extras that were taken out of the car on a prior transaction. Not all of us are in this hobby to make a buck. I have wanted a stingray since I was a kid and it took me 40 yrs.to fulfill my dreams.

IMO he is holding your profession against you and bragging about it.

There is a reason why people say what they do about car salesman

Good luck

Default $500.00 bucks tops

I wouldn't pay anymore then $500.00 for it. If I had it I would give it to the owner. If the owner gave me the paper work I would offer him $500 for his troubles. It has no value to anyone else unless they want to forge a car.

My take is he sounds as though he does not want to sell.Since he is a dealer he probably knows the market as well as anyone.Probably much better then most of us putting are 2 cents in here.He also knows that to you the value is the highest. At least twice what some one might pay for it on Ebay because it is not exactly for their car.If the Ebay price fetches $1500 or so this type of thing. $3000 would seem to be about right I guess for the owner of that car.More or less depending on what the car is.I know that it will raise the value of the car that much easily.Remember like it or not we are in the era of faked cars and original documentation is a real big boost. So I am guessing that he did not just pull a price out of the air.He either feels that this is what it is worth or does not want to sell.If this is the case and you really want/need this you are in a bad situation.Have you made an offer previous to his asking price? did you go the low ball route like a lot of people. This method with a lot of people can really draw a negative reaction. And for me as a seller I generally take the stance of I will sell to any one but this Not knowing your response to his price. If you left the door open.I would just ask his best cash price. If it is more than you want to pay just tell him what you want to pay.If he is a reasonable guy and feels that is what it is worth to him and really wants to sell it he will. After all that is his line of work.If not and you really want to buy it you are in a real bad situation because he really does not want to sell it.Then offer to sell the car to him at your price
