Default GM Sinks

It is sad to see the share price of an iconic company like GM sink to the lowest level in 58 years. I wonder whats in store for this company in the near future.

Yeah...a bud at tonight's Cruise said that GM stock was where it was 50 years ago: ~$5/share...is that figure correct?

Well, in the near future, this is what's in store:
With a total of three new production cars and two concept vehicles that hint at future models, General Motors' most important auto show could be the one in Paris this year. In addition to the Cruze and Orlando, GM will unveil the stylish Cadillac CTS station wagon and its new diesel engine -- a body style and powerplant that are vital to the luxury brand's success in Europe. Saab's 9-X Air convertible concept car will give buyers a look at plans for the next generation of the Swedish brand's iconic ragtop, while GM's Opel brand launches its sleek Insignia station wagon.

GM will spotlight Chevrolet's first global car, the Cruze compact. The Malibu-styled Cruze is to go on sale in Europe next spring, and roll out of Lordstown, Ohio, a year later.

"The Cruze and the Orlando concept car," a Cruze-based seven-passenger compact family vehicle, "are so much on-message for the brand with expressive Chevrolet style in a size that makes sense for Europe," said Brannon, the GM executive. "They're the perfect product representation of what we've been saying Chevrolet is."
Beyond that?

Unfortunately when stocks have this sort of fall, it many times means they will not have the same owners in a few weeks. The bondholders and secured creditors may own the two companies shortly (Ford and GM) Ford was at 2 and change today.

My brother in law who is a used car dealer, said a couple of weeks ago now was the time to buy a used car if you needed one. I guess today is probably even better.

Although rising gas prices and lower home values may have only slightly affected Corvette prices, I suspect the events of the past week and the events which may come in the next week or two, may substaintially effect Corvette prices.

The ride may get bumpy.

GM has been trying to do hybrids for too long, their offerings are really pathetic. They are trying to leapfrog the competition by going H fuel cell or electric...who knows how long this technology will take to develop, if GM survives that long???

Whole economic situation makes me sick

Kinda makes you wonder whether the C6 or maybe the C7 will be the end of the line for the Corvette.

1. The government has learned its lesson with Lehman Brothers. Neither Ford nor General Motors will be ALLOWED to fail. That would lead to spectacular instability in the marketplace which is the the cause of the fear out there right now.
2. I suspect that the C6 will be around for quite a while given the need for cas elsewhere. This is not significantly different than during other times in the car's history where the product lifecycle has been extended.

It's a GREAT time to buy stocks !! I'll put my money where my mouth is. I'm gonna call my broker and buy some GM. I already bought some Ford and have been waiting for prices to go lower. The Fed is NOT gonna let these companies go under.

Watch "Who Killed The Electric Car" .

GM could have had the corner on Hybrids... but they went with Hummer...more money in SUVs/trucks. Then Toyota picked up on it and developed the Prius. GM had no forsight and is paying for it now.

Taxpayers get ready to open the wallets again to bail out the big 3.

Next the airlines will hold out thier hands.... then whos next....well just print more money!

I agree with Pop Chevy- I had the choice to drink the kool-aid or buy stock. As soon as the market opened I chose the latter. If we spent half the time dealing with all of the politicians that want control on top of control on GM rather than gnashing our teeth over armageddon we might not be in this situation-Jim

I'm gonna agree now is a great time to buy stocks, I've been buying along myself, as far as limited cash will allow. But, I'm less sure that now is a great time to buy Ford or GM. Could be that money will be made with these, but I'm more inclined to bet on the strong companies whose price has been beaten down by the freefall. Those are the ones I give a 95% confidence level of their prices being back up within 3-4 year time frame.

Just my thoughts . . .

Better I guess to wait and sell at $4.00 or even $3.00 rather than $5.00? IMHO getting out of GM stock at $5.00 is what those who thought GM was gonna make it and paid more than $5.00 deserve. GM needs a tremendous overhauling before it is ready to move forward. They have floundered and screwed around for YEARS and now it is all coming to a head.

More than likely the taxpayers WILL have to bail out GM and its incompetent management. In the case of AIG it was greed and arrogance, in the case of GM it is monumental CHRONIC stupidity over the past 25 years. When it all comes down to the short strokes as they say the taxpayers will be the ultimate savior of this incompetent giant.

Maybe they won't go under (I think one or both might) but once the fed steps in shareholders are wiped out. It's like throwing good money down the toilet

Exactly right, I bolted out of the market in August when I was down 13% and was mourning my losses - I'm pretty darn thankful right now...
