Default C2 of the Year - Unmodified

For Corvetteforum’s 2020 C2 Corvette of the Year competition you have two choices for entering your Corvette – Unmodified and Modified.

For the Unmodified category, minor modifications are permissible; for the Modified category, your modifications can be for appearance or performance or both.

This thread is for entering your Corvette in the Unmodified category.

You can enter just one of the categories of competition and you do so by posting one photo of your C2 in the appropriate thread no later than 11:59 p.m. PDT, Aug. 6. Moderators then will pick ten of their favorites as finalists and set up a poll to allow you to vote on which of those finalists is the C2 Corvette of the Year in each of the above-referenced categories. The judging, of course, is subjective and will be heavily influenced by the quality of the photographs submitted for the entries.

The contest is open to site users across the globe.

The reward in each of the categories is bragging rights and a designation under your user ID declaring your winning status.

In subsequent months, we’ll feature other generations for Corvette of the Year with the winner in each of those generations competing for Corvetteforum Corvette of the Year. The Corvetteforum Corvette of the Year will be featured on the mobile home page of the site.

The fine print: One entry per member. This contest is open to site users over the age of 18 who own the car they enter. Entry photos must have been shot by the Corvette's owner. That is to avoid professionally made photos which might give the entrant an unfair advantage. If you want to enter a photo of you in or by your car, that's fine so long as the picture was not taken by a professional photographer.

The car’s official GM production date was Monday, June 19, 1967 (within the last 22 days of production for the 1967 model year). It was delivered to Bernard Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in Libertyville, Illinois. The sticker price at the time of the first buyer’s purchase was $5,066.40. From the time of its initial delivery, the car would remain in Libertyville, IL for the next 53 years. The initial local buyer enjoyed the car for nine years. The vehicle was then sold on February 10, 1976, to Gary Swanson of Libertyville, Illinois. Mr. Swanson was 36 years old and had always wanted a Corvette; however, he had only recently been able to afford such a large purchase. Fortunately, since the car was nine years old at the time, Mr. Swanson was able to acquire the car for $3,300. During Mr. Swanson’s ownership, he made several improvements to the vehicle. One improvement included the addition of a side exhaust system. The new, model correct, and genuine GM parts, for the updated exhaust system, were ordered directly from Rockenbach Chevrolet in Grayslake, Illinois (seven miles from Libertyville). The side pipes were installed locally at that time. Mr. Swanson also replaced the original white top, with its current black soft top.

In the early 1980s, well before most people thought to do so, Mr. Swanson personally removed the original tank sticker for safekeeping. Mr. Swanson’s proactive thinking, allowed the sticker to be removed early in the car’s life, and as a consequence, the tank sticker has been preserved quite well. During the same time, Mr. Swanson contracted a local body and paint expert, Bill Okeefe of Libertyville, to repaint the entire car. The vehicle was repainted in its original color, using a correct acrylic lacquer Lucite paint. A paint can from this job remains with the vehicle. This is the only additional paintwork that has ever been done on the automobile.

Mr. Swanson enjoyed the car for many more years. He states in the entire time he owned the car, “it had never seen a raindrop.” Eventually, Mr. Swanson decided to let the car go to a younger generation. So after 27 years of ownership, he sold the car on October 16, 2003, to James and Sandy Pearse, also of Libertyville, Illinois.

After Mr. Pearse purchased the car, it moved 4.5 miles down the road to its new home. Mr. Pierce was a car collector, and the Corvette became a valued addition to Mr. Pearse’s extensive collection of classic cars. It was during this time that Mr. Pearse acquired an auxiliary top for the vehicle. Since the car was still in Libertyville, Mr. Pearse was able to contract the painting of the auxiliary top to Bill Okeefe, who had painted the car when Mr. Swanson owned it. During Mr. Pearse’s ownership, the car remained mostly undriven. Regular maintenance work was routinely performed, and it was taken to several car shows in the Libertyville area, but very few miles were added to the car. The odometer still shows the original, and correct, miles on the car. It is interesting to note that, at one time, Mr. Pearse worked at Bernard Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, where the vehicle had been originally delivered years before.

At some point, Mr. Pearse‘s attention turned to pony cars, and at that time, Mr. Pearse decided he would need to free up some space in his garage for additional Camaros. So, after 17 years of ownership, the car was sold on April 27, 2020, to its current owner.

All information contained within this narrative regarding previous owners was obtained personally, in April 2020, by the current owner; through actual conversations with the individuals mentioned. As of May 5, 2020, Mr. Swanson was 81 years of age and doing well. Both he and Mr. Pearse still live in Libertyville, IL.

I am the third owner of this1967 very original matching number 327/300 4 speed with PB and PS documented 46K mile coupe. Less than 5% of new Corvettes buyers in 1967 selected this Elkhart Blue paint choice. Never judged or shown because it was locked up in a garage by the second owner for over 25 years and rarely driven.

I am the second owner (50 years) of this 1964 Saddle/Saddle Coupe, equipped with the solid lifter L76 engine.
For a variety of reasons, it was stored for 39 years before undertaking a frame off restoration, completed the Summer of 2019.

It was love at first sight 50 years ago, and the romance continues!

Dad bought it new, and it is still in the family. Was Mom's grocery getter when we were kids. Only 'modification' is wheels and tires. The wheels have been on it since '67.

Options from the Window Sticker

Leather BR Blue Trim
4-speed Close Ratio Transmission
Nassau Blue
Wood Steering Wheel
Tinted Windshield
Transistor Ignition Equipment
Side Dual Exhaust
Special Suspension Equipment
Positraction Axle 4.11
L72 425 HP V-8 TURBOJET

Stopped by to visit with Dad, to bring him a Coke, and show him that we are taking care of the car.

C3 of Year Finalist (appearance mods) 2019

Not a glamor shot-not even me in the picture but it is the first week the car came to it's new home. Originally bought in San Diego from the long gone Campbell Chevrolet Company, I'm the second owner. I found it in a garage in Old Town San Diego and begged my way into owning it. The car had a frame on paint and interior refresh in 1991 and sat until I made the deal. Fuel injected, 4 speed, with a 4.11 rear end, with no other creature comforts it is stock. The numbers match and most of the parts are original to the car. Yes, it still has the original fuel injection and runs jut fine. If you are uncomfortable with the wheel choice, you'll have to make your complaints to the dealer as that's when they were installed along with exhaust cutouts, just before he made several 1/4 mile passes. I was lucky to find it and even more fortunate to buy it. I may have more flattering pictures but this one is pretty significant to me.
Thanks for the consideration!

Original Owner purchased Purchased Aug 31, 1967 Bob Salter Chevrolet while he was in US Navy flight training has a Helo rescue pilot. He ( my 76 y/o neighbor & friend ) kept the car until the summer of 2019 ( 52 years) when he wanted it to go to a good home as his health was not what it used to be, it was stored in his daughters garage and not driven in the last 20 years just occasionally started and washed . He and I have taken her to a show and parade or two since. Yes its an original Tuxedo Black on Saddle vinyl interior trim tag 900 /420 he selected of the lot when he traded in his 1965 HIPO Mustang convertible . A true no hit / Unmolested numbers matching motor and drive train 327/350hp 4speed. Manual steering and brakes am/fm, black top and original spare tire. Every bid of documentation you could ever want including the original title and Navy Federal Credit Union loan paperwork. As an Aviator keeps his log books, he had documented every piece of maintenance and kept every part sales receipt. I was also fortunate enough to create a 26 minute video ( he's a man of few words) interviewing him and his lovely wife documenting the car's facts / memories / stories over the 52 years of ownership. Although she is comfortably stored in my garage, I will always consider her Al's vette, I am just his WNGMAN .

The language above, "Cars which have previously won are not eligible." was boilerplate inadvertenly picked up from an earlier contest. The lawyers required us to include that in the rules when we were offering prizes that had a cash value. Now that we don't offer prizes with a cash value, it negates the need for that restriction as well as the earlier restriction that prohibited entries from people from outside the US. I'm deleting that from the fine print. Sorry for any confusion that may have caused.

I've owned this car since 1967, purchased with my paper route savings. I drove it summers till 1972, then stored it till 1981. My Dad and I restored it in his basement over 3 years, and then showed it in many events. Subsequently I drove it from Monterey back to Michigan, and had a ball. It was refreshed in 2006, and judged again to Duntov, and Bloomington standards. I am taking it on a rally tomorrow with my daughter!
enjoy.
