I have all major components to build L79. I need your recommendations for part numbers and suppliers for the following to wrap it up. Thanks in advance. Bill

cam & lifter set.

water pump

Timing chain.

Timing gear.

Timing cover

oil pan.

oil pump.

gasket kit (or recommended mfg)

GM sells the cam and lifter kit made by Crane Cams. GM 12364050.

I'd use a Cloyes true roller timing chain set Summit p/n CLO-9-3100.

You will probably have to find an original timing chain cover from someplace like Paragon unless someone is reproducing them now. Paragon also sells just the timing tab should you find the correct shaped cover and need to weld on the tab.

I'd call Bill Mock or one of the other water pump guys that advertise in the Driveline for an original water pump.

I believe the oil pan is available in reproduction.

For the best in original appearing intake gasket use the ones from Paragon.

The head gasket choice will depend on how everthing measures and what final compression you want.

Sealed Power or Melling offer a standard M55 oil pump.

I'd go with Sealed Power for everything inside the engine. Just ask for the stock OEM factory replacement parts. I don't know if they make an oil pump. Mellings does. Don't let anyone talk you into flat top pistons for that engine. Use the OEM domed replacements. Same goes for the camshaft. Use the original replacement grind L-79 cam from Sealed Power.

If you buy an engine kit, pay a few bucks extra for moly piston rings instead of the standard cast iron. Fel-pro blue gasket set works fine.

Lots of places online sell engine rebuild kits. One place is Northern Auto parts. They're in Iowa or around there. I've bought several kits from them. Best price I could find. Fast service and good help on the phone when you call.

If your engine have the small journal rods you might want to consider using stronger rods such as Crower Sportsman .

For Cam and lifters etc I used Comp Cams Nostalgia Plus N+L79H: Cam & Kit PART #K12-671-4 Has all the above plus decent set of pushrods.

Just for insurance I put some Scat Rods inside. I figured those std GM rods had been going around a bit to long for my liking.

Shes SWEET! Have just 900 miles on the motor. Chasing a minor antifreeze leak (happens when I spin her to 6500 + rs). I will find her. That fan throws fine spots over the left half of the motor. Case of just checking all the hoses and clamps as well as the water pump bolts.

WILL DO a sound clip (ideally, Id like to do a fly by and post that).

Don't you have to heat the rod to install the wrist pin?

With the pictured type of piston you could press the wrist pins in OR you can heat the wrist pin end of the connecting rod and install that way. I have used both methods and prefer the heating of the connecting rod. No chance of damaging the piston that way.

I have not observed the blueing (sp) when using a rod heater myself.

To you knowledge, is the timing chain CLO-9-3100 compatible with the reproduction timing cover offered by paragon (p/n6731)?

It fits under an OEM cover so assuming the repop is good it should fit.

One thing about those Crower rods, they're expensive!!!

You can get H-beams for the price of those Crowers.

Eagle or Scat rods are plenty strong and much cheaper.

The later factory rods are also OK, unless you are going to 7500RPM (which you won't with the L79 cam).
