Default 460hp... new suspension?

I'm dropping a 460hp stroker 383 in a 64 vette... so will the rear end need heavy duty springs for the torque produced? What about driveshaft? I know she'll need traction bars to keep the rear end down... Would love to hear some comments as i'm not the most experienced in this...

There's no torque reaction on the spring with the independent rear suspension, nor traction bars either. If you're going to use wider-than-stock tires, you'd better invest in some stout half-shafts.

Also if your 64 has the original posi then you might want to consider an Eaton, polished and tuned.

Like JohnZ said, if you're going to put more rubber to the road then the General intended, better go with strengthened half-shafts (his photo says it all). I also recommend you get your posi unit checked-out - a strengthened unit (as mentioned) above, may be the way to go if yours is tired. Finally, some high strength, cap-screw-type u-joints would be good.

My 66 stock BB dyno'd 465hp at the flywheel and I'm running stock everything. Is the recommendation re strengthened rear and heavy shafts all pointed to tire traction - ie run stock tires A OK -- wide tires beef up as described or is the strocker 460hp at the rear wheels?

While there is no torque reaction in the spring, the added power will drive more weight transfer, and you will get more "squat" on acceleration. The weight transfer is physics, and you cannot alter it without changing ride height. However, you can limit the squat with a stiffer spring (same load, less deflection). If you do go to the HD springs, be sure and get the matching fronts and sway bar.

You don't need anything stronger than whats there now unless your going to run slicks and drag race it. We have a blown 427 small block and richmond 6 speed with all stock drive shaft and half shafts. Stock 3.36 rear. It dose burnouts and dounuts every time it's on the road. Been driving it that way for two years now. I'm sure at some time something will break but how much are you going to abuse the car?

I also have a 69 with a very strong tunnel rammed small block. Stock m20 trans and all drive line in that one too. I can't see anyone abusing there vette like I do to this car. Over two years never broke any thing.

460 HP is no big deal. Don't worry about it. This is my 69 rat rod. At the end of this seaon it's going to get a frame off rebuild.

If you just want the motor for the street, you are probably ok with stock as long as all are in good condition. BUT as other has pointed out, more traction, less forgiving, especially at the drag strip with hot sticky rubber on the ground. Personally, I would replace the half shafts and have Gary do a tune-up on the rear end.

Wish I could have seen that at the Heavenly Donut shop a few weeks ago..I drove down from Manchester and was pleasantly surprised with the turn out.. That thing looks mean..

BTW to the OP I agree with what's been posted above. However if you wish to make sure you never have a problem look into how Tom's modifies the diff's to hold more HP.. Dave
