Default Help with 64 Air Cleaner

Gentlemen,

When I purchased my 64, it had an after-market air cleaner (atop a Carter 4-bbl) that was being crushed by the hood. I finally got rid of it and bought an Edelbrock "low profile" tricorner - but it didn't fit either. I had the base milled down .5 inch and it fit perfectly. However, the carb ate right through the foam element and put me back at the starting line.
OEM air cleaners are at least $250 everywhere I look. I'm an ex-Army Ranger, turned graduate student, who is on a budget. What good, economical alternatives do I have?

Welcome to the corvetteforum and congratulations on your first post. I searched the forum and found the following thread that may be helpful: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zero...111425#1111425 . I recently bought a drop base air cleaner (1.5" drop) and top from a company called Universal Spinner for about $50. I'm sure there are others out there from other makers.

Take the car to your local speed shop and tell them what you are looking to do. I had a 63 with a similar problem. They special ordered an air cleaner set up with an extra offset drop. Can't remember the manufacturer from then but they should be able to help you out. I know this solution was not expensive.

I have the same air cleaner on my engine and did the exact same to the base as you. I also had to put a small dent in the pass. side on top of the screen to clear the hood. :( Mine's been on for over a year now and the foam is indeed starting to get a little thin at the front. The foam replacements (or the whole air cleaner for that matter) are only about $13 at the local cut rate parts stores. About 5 minutes and you're back on the road. :yesnod:

I've got the same problem with my 64. Summitt has a 14" dia 3" element drop base air cleaner for $35.00. I ordered one last month but it has been on back order, hope to see it this week. If this doesn't work you can get a 66-67 BB air cleaner base, they are about $80. I know this will work because I tried my buddies on my car and it cleared.

Sounds very familiar.

I´ve tried at least three different air cleaner set ups, and now have an Edelbrock air cleaner with 2" cleaner element (normally 3" high). However, now the clearance between the carb and cleaner lid is at best marginal. So, my next plan is to order an OEM set up. It may be expensive, but at least the fit is perfect and the look is all orginal, which is my goal after all.

I had the same problem with my 65 when I went to the taller RPM intake manifold. The edelbrock filters melted on the carb.

I went to a original round 66 or 67 style chrome air cleaner that drops around the carb and has plenty of clearance. It cost me $100, but helps add to the sleeper look of my motor. K&N also has a new line of air cleaners and lids that have a deep drop over the carb, but I don't know how much they cost.

Tapio, I ran into similar problems also. 3" elements were too tall for hood clearance and 2" were too low for carb clearance. Solved the problem with a 2 1/4" K&N element with a 1/4" gasket made from vacuum tubing under it.

Vetterodder, thanks for the tip. I have to research this K&N stuff.
