Default 1963 Corvette Inner door **** question

Hello

I noticed the inside **** (black plastic ball) on the passenger side is loose. I first thought that the **** needed to be tighten (screwed) but it is tight on post. The post that goes into the mechanism (latch appears to be "X" shape with a smal spring in center) is loose. I have never taken off the door panel before on this car. My question, is there a screw on the back of the post that can be tighten, or is the post riveted to the latch?

Thanks
Pete

I think you'll find that most of them are loose. I don't think it can be tightened. I put a piece of foam behind mine so when the door panel is on it makes it a tighter fit.

If you take it apart, you can tack weld it.

That's what I did. Tack weld it behind so you can't see the weld.

I believe the "post" is pushed/swedged in.

I have an old old article that has a cure for your problem. If you want I can search my archives [boxes of vette mags] and fax it to you. Chuck is right on, the article will provide the details. BTW the return spring is available and should be replaced also.

Received a new one in from ZIP, the shaft on it was loose also, put a couple of jamb nuts on it to protect the threads and peened the shaft tighter to the metal. While you're in the door is a good time to check the door latch assembly. Over time there is a small finger that will wear away and make you have to pull further on the door **** to release the door.

This thread covers more of the latch possible issues (Less frequently will happen to passenger door) http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1718762

Good Luck,

Andy

On a '63 the door chrome ball is supposed to be black? Next you'll tell me the Stick shift ball is supposed to be black too! At least my console plate is black.
