Default Do they still sell those small FM tuners/adapters?

Hi,
My car has a restored wonderbar, but around here AM radio is talk only.
Back in the seventies and eighties, they sold small FM tuner adapters for about twenty bucks that would allow you to listen to FM through your AM radio. Anyone know if they still sell them anywhere? No luck so far...

Thanks,
Paul

Just did a quick check on eBay and found several currently listed, so their still out there. Have you considered a remote CD player or iPod instead?

Fawndeuce, my wife got me the coolest item for my recent birthday. She gave me XM Radio for my Silverado truck at Christmas and love it, but I didn't have any tunes for the 59 or the 62. Sooooooo, for my birthday she got me an XM Radio Audiovox Express "BoomBox" unit that can be set up in the garage or in the Vettes!!!!! It runs on either AC power or 8 C-type batteries. Portable satellite radio for the Vettes!! Cool!!! The BoomBox can be had at any Super Target store and is not very big. Sounds awesome. Has a portable antenna that can be extended up to about 15 feet for in home use. You might want to try this option.

Thanks guys,
Both good ideas, but I'm just looking for a cheap simple converter like the one's on E-Bay, that I can hide up under the dash and quickly remove for NCRS judging.
I guess I'll have to pickup a used one...

I bought an Audiovox FM converter on Ebay last year that was still new in the box. I was surprised how many of them showed up there over a couple weeks time. Just keep monitoring Ebay and watch out for what looks like a complete one with the bracket and wiring all intact.

By the way - it works great.

I have a new Sparkomatic model FMX 10 FM stereo radio (not a converter) that is 6 1/2 inches wide by 1 inch high by 5 inches deep. Don't have the box but it is new from 25 years ago. Has balance and tone controls as well as volume. If you are interested purchasing please send me an email.

Thanks

I bought an FM converter for my 56 new in the box at a swap meet for $15. Stuck it between one of the defroster duct hoses and the heater box. Hasn't moved in 6 years. Make sure you install an inline fuse

Yup, in '62 the wonderbar had AM only, don't know what year they began transmitting on the FM band?

FM converter? Why not just put a FM inline with your wonderbar? Is it not the same thing as a converter? What am I missing here?

The FM converters were small devices that you would plug into the antenna socket on the back of your AM radio, and then plug the antenna into the converter. You would then tune your AM radio to 1400 to receive whatever station you selected on the FM tuner.
Worked well, had one in a '70 Dart about a million years ago...

My parents had an FM receiver in the house back in the middle or late '50s, so it has been at least that long.

Had a '76 Jeep CJ that I couldn't lock so I used one of those old FM converters (cost $12?) and was pretty satisfied for my daily commute. Fidelity wasn't so great but I got to hear the radio guy who invented "shock jockery".
