Have my valve covers off so as not to damage them while doing work on the engine and currently using plastic as a cover.

Was thinking it would be great if there were plastic temporary valve covers that could be put in place instead for protection. Is there such a thing?

Almost any swapmeet will have plenty of sets of $5 steel valve covers. You could also try a junkyard.
