Anyone else got any info on the Can Am big block engines? Hate to see this thread die out.

Unfortunately, I think many secrets have been lost or forgotten. It was a series that was unparalleled until Group C IMSA and had a life that was far too short. It is something I would like to see archived, with specs on chassis and engines with casting numbers and any other info available. It has been a pleasure though to stumble upon this thread and hear from people that had a hand in or around the Alum BBC builds.

A friend of mine says he can remember the sounds of those big block Can Am engines in the cool early morning hour practice sessions at Watkins Glen. He said "there's nothing like the sound of a Can Am big block Chevy".................................. ..................and he's a Ford guy!!!!!!

Funny thing, I have not been able to find this thread in the forum (I was using all post function), because I usually only go to C3 gen/tech didn't realize it was in the C1/C2 forum. You guys are alright over here.

One nice part about being drafted in 72 was being sent to Ft Ord. Laguna Seca Raceway was supposedly on Army property, so I could get into the races for free. Those 494s were very cool to watch, but IIRC, the pancake 12 Turbo Porches were giving them fits. I remember how they would pop between shifts...and how quick they were. I got to run an Army mail truck around the track one afternoon. The mail clerk and me had nothing to do... so we drove out there...and there was nobody around...did not think to clock myself.

Many of the Pro Stock racers used the cranks from the 348/409 engines to make high winding big blocks in the early 80's... The 348/409 shares the same bore spacing as the Mark IV BB-4.84 inches.
The 409 has a stroke of 3.5 inches and the Impala SS still had the 409 in 1964- two years before the start of Can Am. I would imagine in '66 that GM had plenty of 3.5 inch 409 cranks lying around.
348- 3.25 inch stroke
409- 3.50 inch stroke
Z11/427- 3.65 inch stroke
Seems logical that the 4.44 bore block would have standard BB bore
spacing to use the 409 crank... I have no idea on the Reynolds blocks.

At least the BB Chevys SOUNDED a lot more potent - almost as good as a RR Merlin V-12!
