Default Who carries the correct type of solid lifter cam for a 1966 BB 427/425 hp

Please help. I Need the correct type of solid lifter cam for a 1966 BB 427/425 hp "L72". Crane Cams does not carry the correct blueprint series for this motor anymore. Who do you gents recommend?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi

Comp Cams has a few "nostalgia grinds" available. Check out their catalog and you will see a solid one for a 427.

However be advised that cam technology has come a long ways since then and at least considering the "why not" of later profiles may help to put some better alternatives up for consideration.

If you're going to run this motor thru manifolds (versus headers) may I suggest that you have a LT1 profile ground on a rat blank. Same intake lobe as the rat street mechanical with an earlier opening and longer duration exhaust. The stock rat exhaust system is an immense horsepower killer and needs help. From a driveability standpoint and idle characteristics (and fuel economy) it will be undetectable from the regular street mechanical and have more topend. Crane will readily grind this for you as they have all the lobe masters.

Whatever cam you use, make sure it has a groove machined in the rear journal, or you won't have any oil pressure to the lifters.

Hi John

I too had heard that and went down this trail when I was selecting a camshaft. It was told to me that the difference is in the bearing between pre 67 BB versus 67 and later, and not the camshaft.

In the link below I see comp cams does not differentiate between years.

I don't think Comp sells one machined anymore. You have to take it to be done. Not a big deal..but if it's '66 block...you'll need it.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The '65-'66 BLOCK is different, which requires a DIFFERENT rear cam bearing, AND a cam with a grooved rear journal. You'd think the "tech" guys at the cam companies would know this, but obviously they don't.

I know you and Jim have the knowledge down so I hope no one follows after what I was told.

My old motor in my 66 was a 351 and the new one is a stroked 454 marine block so it did not matter to me but I understand not having it right is catastrophic.
