Converting Mech tach to Electric ?
I have a non tach drive HEI distributor and would like to convert the stock tach to work with this setup. I know that there are people out there that do this, but I'm a DIY kind of guy. So if you've done this conversion yourself please point me in the right direction. If not could you please let me know where you had yours done.
Thanks in advance

Russ:
I converted a C1 tach to electric. Here are a few pictures:

In my case I bought an Autometer tach off ebay for $25.00 and made an aluminum frame to hold the electric guts inside the old housing and I used the old face plate and needle. Can't help much if you are working on a C2 tach. Just be sure that the "swing" on the electric tach matches the mechanical one. In other words the indicated speed that 90° of needle swing produces on the new tach should produce the same speed reading as 90° of swing on the old one. Also a lot of the electric tachs do not indicate 0 rpm until you power them up. With no voltage applied they may indicate 1000rpm or so with no power so be sure to take this into consideration before you fasten the needle.

For my 62 LS1 conversion,I first ordered one from an outfit called Corvette Instuments. $275 outright. The thing didnt fit under the speedo--returned after some wrangling. Said he had made lots of em and never had a problem.
I then bought a cheap suntach from the local advance auto ~$45.
Has same sweep as stock tach. I took out electronic guts and put in my stock can, used stock face and rest of parts. Works like a champ.
Sorry have no pix

Thanks for the replies, I have a Auto Meter tach mounted on my column now and have thought about removing the guts like some of you have, but it would be a hit or miss best guess as to which tach had all the right workings. Rodgers Clocks has done his home work and I'm not against sending him business, but in my case $300.00 is more than I can afford for a tach.
Please keep the replies comming.

Kyle, I had to raise and lengthen the hood to get it to fit.
Charles, you and I must be on the same path. EFI, electronic tachs, air fuel meters and the lot.
Thanks to the rest of you that responded.
