Is change to oil a government conspiracy?
No, I don't have so much time that I sit and watch reruns of the old TV series X-files, but recently a friend provided me an article that claims our government is behind a critical change with typical off-the-shelf consumer-grade oil. The claim states that today's oil will cause sooner than designed engine failure in older (non-roller cam) engines thus reducing, or eliminating, engines that create higher levels of air born pollutants.
As stated, I'm not one to conjure or imagine conspiracy ideas but the article provide me is authored by a person supposedly associated with Quaker State.
I haven't finished the article yet, but thought I'd float the notion to the forum to see if anyone else has heard of this?
Respectfully,

P.S. If anyone is interested, I can scan the article and post it once I have finished it.

Demand is what drives the market. Oil for roller cams is in demand because it is cheaper to make (not as many additives).
The "quick" lube places buy the cheapest oil. Therefore the demand is for the oil that is roller cam friendly.

Search for ZDDP or phosphorus on this forum. These oil anti-wear additives supposedly hurt newer emission equipment
Sorry no conspiracy....
Use Diesel oil, it's still got the old additives

I agree but from what I have read recently even these Diesel grade oils are reducing their additive packages

"The main use of ZDDP is in anti-wear additives to lubricants (eg. greases, motor oils). To date it is the dominant anti-wear agent, present in most machine and motor oils in amount of about 1%. However for motor oil applications the amount of ZDDP has to be minimized, as the zinc and phosphorus emissions damage catalytic converters"
It is written on the Internet, and as the self-proclaimed father of the Internet says, "It is written to be bad in my book, and it will be banned."
Additives, additives, additives ...
(where can someone buy stock in a ZDDP additive company?)

That's correct - the "CI" grade of diesel oil that's been around for a number of years is being replaced by "CJ", which contains less ZDDP than the "CI" (but still more than mass-market oil for spark-ignition gasoline engines); the previous levels of ZDDP in diesel oil reduce the effectiveness of the particulate traps required in order to meet the new Tier II diesel emission standards.

Oil issue
Can't believe all the buzz about oil.the myth about Rotella is just a myth.I talked to one our senior chemists out west and asked him his input. He mentioned that todays fully synthetic oils are the best ever produced and far exceed prior oils.go out and buy a name brand 5w/30 oil and your engine will love you for it !

Good ole STP oil treatment (blue bottle) sez it is loaded with ZDDP right on the bottle. $2 at any store. HOWEVER, it really thickens up the oil!! Judging on how much my oil pressure went up, I'd guess a 30 wt goes up to a 50....not what I needed.
STP also make an oil stabilizer, sez has ZDDP. Saw it at Wallmart

O.K., I had a chance to glance at the article today. And, as I have not finished it, I noticed that it originally appeared in a 2006 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. It goes on to suggest that 'the powers that be' have mandated the reduced oil additives and thus much less pollutant and reduced non-roller type engine life (...the conspiracy idea). I'm not all that fired up about scanning a copy-written article and posting it in our forum, but I will look closer to see what issue it appeared, if anyone is interested.
As asked earlier though, all this discussion leads up to a simple question that I have -what type of oil to run in our BRAND NEW engine? The friend who gave me the article suggests GM brand oil. Any thoughts?

Regarding Rotella being a myth, I am certainly no chemist...but my understanding is that it is the ZDDP contained in diesel oils that is supposed to help protect engines of our vintage. So I'm interested in hearing about the possibilities with additives...
