Default 396 - VIN: 194375S117950 or 194675S117950 I have your block

It is a D24-5 casting. T0510IF. #5117950
Original bore, one cylinder has a sleeve. Bare Block. No Heads.
It looks quite original, but wouldn't a sleeve require decking?
Been sitting in my pops garage for about 10 years
I have no immediate plans for it, so I figured I would put it out there, on the chance someone is looking for it.

Good luck. Maybe teh car still exists.

the reason Corvette motors that aren't blown up are out there, is the rest of the car usually met an unfortunate demise.

Though you may want to check with teh GM registry and see if they have any record of somebody calling it in.

Probly the case, but I read before that these engines sometimes liked to throw a rod. (Hence the sleeve) They would just pull 'em out and put in something else. Perhaps that's why there are Corvettes out there where the motor has been the one to meet the unfortunate demise. Too many r's I suppose
Maybe someone will get lucky.

I checked the C2 registry, thanks for the idea.
You got me thinking, I wonder if more cars are looking for engines or are there more engines looking for cars?

GM hss been collecting SN info for years, I got some monthly free mag back in the 1970's when I called in. All GM wanted was the VIN, your name and address.

Charlie - If no one has said it yet, Welcome to the Corvette Forum. If your Dad's 65 L78 is still around, we're hoping you do get reunited with the original block.
On a side note, a friend (Gary Cowans) and I, both members here on the Corvette Forum and the NCRS, have been compiling a list of any and all 1965 396 Corvettes we come across.
So far we are up around 358 out of the original 2157 made in 65. The lists are in two places, on the NCRS site and they are also added into the public C2Registry.org site for 1965 Corvettes,
If your Dad's 65 L78 is still around and you would like to have your, or your Dad's, L78 added to them, do let us know via PM or Email via the Corvette Forum.

Unfortunately, it seems Tiros has ignored my posts and messages, which leads to confusion over the status and location of my father’s original 396 block. We’d be willing to pay a good amount for it - at least to us it’s an extremely important thing to keep original parts together, even if we have the crate engine in it now. There’s nothing lost or gained in this situation but it is bothersome to know the block is actually out there somewhere and its potential owner won’t respond. Oh well!
unreal that the guy won’t let you know one way or the other.
I noticed his last activity was today at around 11:00!

I may be wrong but I think you have a choice whether or not to receive email notification when you get a PM. The guy may not realize there is a PM waiting for him. The fact he started the thread and put the info out there suggests he's aware it would be of value to you. Give him a few days slack.

I sent him two messages, replied to three of his posts, and even posted on his page directly. Best to think as nothing lost or gained here, but can’t help but feel bummed about it!

We have six C2 convertibles and our 396 was the only one without its original engine —which is why the L88-inspired ZZ427 / 480 hp crate engine was a good option. Total beast of a car that runs and performs much better than the 396 installed beforehand.

17+ years ago was when he posted he had this engine...
You would think someone else, 'a friend' would see that you responded...here and contact him about it...

There are numerous posts about him having this block, with the last mention (that I know of) taking place in 2015 — about 8.5 years ago. Still quite a long time since that post, but it demonstrates that he’s had the block for a very, very long time. Besides, this is the only single place I’ve seen information mentioning our 396’s VIN, so it really is my only hope. Even a brief response from Tiros on the status of our block would be appreciated… He’s very active on this site so maybe he will still yet respond..

People are fickle. He might be in the camp of, I got a 63 SWC sitting rotting in my yard, but I’m not selling just to spite everyone who wants to buy. Or maybe he doesn’t have it anymore and he doesn’t want to respond to avoid an inquisition.

C'mon guys it's only been 2 days. I appreciate why it's a hot nut though. Could not believe it myself. I check in here most everyday. Just didn't notice the PM or activity till this morning.
The good news is I still have it!!!

I'm sure we can work something out. Not sure how to value it. Maybe just send me that ZZ427

I'm gonna try to get some pictures, cause everyone likes those.

You mean you have not been checking the forum 3 times a day for 17 years, waiting for a reply? Slacker!

Patience - some have it, some don't. Glad to see this seems headed for a happy ending.

Wow, great to hear that the block could finally be reunited after that many years. That can’t happen often.

well to be honest the new forum layout at the top for PM is kinda small and not very noticeable unless you are looking up there. Gladd you got back to him and still have the block. That is what makes this forum great.

I’ve missed PM flags up there for weeks. There may be one now - guess I need to go look.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS!! How exciting!! Thanks for getting back to me. And sorry for the impatience - with so many methods trying to contact over the last 10 days or so and no familiarity of this website, I was unsure. I’m like a horse chomping at the bit over here!! Looking forward to more info and discussion. -Charlie
