Default '66 Hupcap paint?

Looking to restore a set of caps I picked up at Carlisle. Can anyone help me mind the correct paint? Frankly, I'm not sure whether the gray or black is correct. I skimmed a couple of parts catalogs and did not see anything. Thanks for the help.

Long Island Corvette supply has the correct color for the hub caps and used it when I had done mine. Kind of like a dark charcoal color. Compared the color to an NOS hubcap I have and the color is correct.
Looking at the can "65 -66 Hub Cap
Dark Grey Spray Paint
#45-25"

Think the 45-25 is section 45 part 25 in the catalog.

Just wanted to mention also to you that the purchased paint does not provide the slight "texture" feel that the originals have. So best not to remove what is already there and just add the paint over the existing and apply it as light as possible.
Another nice touch (I'm into making it exact as the factory) is the spray actually fades from the painted area to the non-painted area over about 1/16" to 1/8". I found it best to mask this "fading area" to preserve it exactly as it came from the factory. Very light spray coat, for the area next to that masking, to prevent any line from developing.

Default 1966 Hubcap Photos

I took these shots of my 1966 originals last night for a similar question on the NCRS discussion board. The color in the photos is a very good representation (note the graininess mentioned earlier)....

So how does one paint the hubcaps? I mean how did the factory do it? I doubt they paid a guy to
tape each individual section. I am thinking of doing mine. Are the hubcaps chromed or
stainless? Also a while back a forum member mentioned a guy who restores hubcaps and that he
did an excellent job on his 63's. Anyone remember the name of the guy?(in case I have to tape
each spoke)

Thanks, SVX

They are stainless not chromed.

Below come straight from the NCRS Manual:

"The hubcap dish is polished stainless steel with five rectangular openings trimmed with a charcoal paint accent. Four hubcaps are supplied with each car"

SVXr, I believe (not 100% sure) the caps were originally painted with a masking device that was placed over the entire hubcap then all 5 areas sprayed at the same time. The "mask device" didn't fit snuggly hence the edges have the slight overspray fading region (for a lack of a better term).

You can get the desired edge by using a process called back taping in the auto body paint business. The masking tape is layed down overlaping the desired area paint area and the edge is not pressed down . When spraying the paint this allows the paint to "overspary" under the masking tape giving you the edge you want.
