"519" questions
I'm interested in finding a correct block for my '60, and need a few hints. When the cars were made, did they just have a dated block, or was there a block with vin. # on it too?
If my car was made on Mar 7, 1960 (#4836), would the block have that same date, or would the date be kinda close to that date? were all 519 blocks for Corvettes, or were they used in other Chevys?? Thanxx!

The typical cast date on the block is about 3 to 4 weeks prior to the cars assembly date. The block was cast at the Saginaw Foundrty and was shipped to the Flint Engine . There the block was machined and assembled. The pad was stamped with an F, the assembly date and a 2 letter engine and trans code. The VIN was stamped beginning late in the 60 model year at St Louis.

NCRS allows full judging credit for a block casting date up to six months prior to the car's final assembly date, so that widens your options for finding a block. Try Randy at www.engineslimited.com .
519 blocks were cast at both Saginaw and Tonawanda, but only Saginaw-cast blocks were used at Flint Engine, which supplied all Corvette small-block engines; you need a "Flint" block, which will have a single digit for the year in the casting date - Tonawanda blocks used two digits for the year code. The other difference is this square-head 1/8" NPT plug at 11 o'clock just above the timing cover - all Flint blocks had them, and Tonawanda blocks didn't.
