Default WTB 1965-1967 Convertible 4-speed

I am a new member looking to buy a 1965-67, convertible, 4-speed. I had found two that I thought would work but decided to post something here to see if there something within the Forum. I've been looking for awile, primarily eBay, Autotrader, and some well-known dealers. I am expanded my search.

I have the following prefererences: Original or period correct replacement parts; silver or blue exterior and black interior (will consider silver/ silver combination); 327 small block.

Looking for a #2 or #3 condition; no projects.

Have a budget of ~$55k. I live in Houston and will drive to see one.

I will appreciate any help.

Also, do you (or anyone out there) have any thoughts on Buyavette in Atlanta or Mershon's in Ohio. These are the two that I've had the most conversations.

Can I ask what additional information, pictures, evaluation have you received on this car to be able to make an offer?
If it's no more than what the web site says, there's no way an offer can be made, IMO.

Did you notice that this car is an AO Smith built car BUT both doors are not AO Smith. One is a St Louis door and one is an AO Smith.

That would indicate there has been body damage to at least one side.

AO Smith used a different rivet than St Louis in several locations.
If you PM me I'll provide more info. Might not be the best idea to post on a public forum.

My offer was a naive offer based on a comparison to what I saw others with similar options. Also, it was based on my budget and willingness to pay. I was going to fly up to see the car and have an expert look at it. I was told that the price was just reduced.

I may be going about all wrong. I see in your other note that you commented about the doors. Can you also PM me as to how you know?

Its a bit of a learning curve, and lots of pitfalls, but there are some good folks here on the forum that can help you out.

You seem to be serious in your search... so I would recommend
1) Joining the NCRS. Its $35. They have a newsletter and a separate classified magazine that they send out regularly. That is ultimately where I got the lead to my car (I took an ad in their Driveline mag)
There is a Texas Chapter, more info can be found here
http://www.ncrstexas.org/

2) Join a Local Club
I think its important to join a local club as well... these guys will know of cars that are for sale CLOSE to you. The best deals and sometimes best cars never make it to craigslist or ebay. They are guys that are "thinking about selling their car" and go by word of mouth. If you are not in the know, then you will be forever a day light and a dollar short chasing cars that 1000s of would be buyers see every day.
Not only that, it will help establish a net work of Corvette brothers that will be priceless to your ownership.
You are lucky... Houston has many.
Sam Houston Corvette Club
The Corvette Owners Club of Houston
Space City Corvette Club
San Jacinto Corvette Club
Info about Houston Clubs, from THIS website

That being said, here is a car that meets your description.. even has A/C, which may come in handy in your part of the woods

I want to thank you all for the helpful advice. I truly appreciate the wealth of experience and the willingness to share your experience and knowledge with those that are still learning.

I am continuing my search and trying to remain patient, and not get compulsive with this purchase. I am working to learn as much as possible so that I can make as informed of a decision as possible.

I am taking all of your advice and using it going forward. Truly know that you are appreciated. Please feel free to contact me about any 65-67, 4-speed, Vert in the $50k range that YOU would feel comfortable with (based on the information that you have), and I will take a look at it.

Thanks again.

Need your thoughts on these two. There will be a formal inspection done. I want to get thoughts before engaging in negotiations, and/or going to see it, and sending someone to see it.

Also, any thoughts on the price point based on what you see, and whether you see anything materially wrong. Thank you!

The Proteam 67:

A 20 year old Second Flight Award doesn't add much value, if any.
It is a AO Smith build so the sidepipes are not original to the car.
The front end is misaligned for whatever reason. Look at the bumpers in relation to the grille and the surround.
Price is too high for a base engine convertible.
Paint seems to be dull.

The Mershon 67:

Better wheel/tire combination.
Paint looks better than the Proteam car, although the pictures were taken in the bright sunlight.
Front end is straight.
Under hood photo shows an external fuel filter. 67 used an internal filter at the carburetor fuel inlet.
Price is also too high.

Good luck with your search,
Dave

Dave,

Thank you for your input. I also believe that the price is too high for both of them, but I do not have an idea of what is a fair price. Hagerty's Price Guide puts a 1967 327/300hp Condition 2 @ $80K, and a Condition 3 @ $60k. Both of these are touted as a 3+/2 condition before considering the options (side exhaust, PS, etc.), which at $69.9k, appears to be in the ballpark.

I still have the inspection to do, and do not know what I will find, but I'm hoping to get an ideal as to how reasonable (or unreasonable), I am being in my expectation of how much lower the price can go?

Any additional help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Derrick
