Danny Popp & his ASP Z06 gets a great write up in Grassroots Mag
The articale details how almost stock his car is. With a few mods over 400+hp at the wheels. He hopes to get the weight down under 3000 lbs. with a little more work. Great artical.
Danny has answered many questions for myself. I had a power steering problem in San Diego last year, called him at his work in Ohio and he was able to locate a dealer to help me out with the parts I needed.
So the question is do I leave the Z06 stock or move to ASP?

Just think about how much money you'd have to invest just to be competitive in ASP ...... and Thomason and Popp are on a different level all together. Yay leaf springs! Then again, if you got money to burn .....

Re: Danny Popp & his ASP Z06 gets a great write up in Grassroots Mag (DKTZ06)
The reason I can't wait to see it is because, I have played around with the idea of competing locally in ASP and Nationally in SS.
I am and would get my butt kicked in SS--where I currently compete. So getting killed nationally wouldn't be any big deal.
The bottom line is that I went nuts and have so different tires and wheels in the SS sizes(wheels----but tires I am all over the map)
Currently I am experimenting in 10 days with a3s04 305/30/18 in front on stock Z06 wheel(ccw), and also 335/30/18 ecsta(on ccw also---and boy was that tire a bitch to get on the wheel)----------just heat cycled the ecstas on the street it felt good, as far as competition who knows?
For the next 2 pro's I'll be running in SS with that crazy ecsta size in back and with the a3s03 in the front.
What do you think ?
I am just trying to have fun and burn up some tires ?
I know if I do much more than this I'll probably screw up my car !
Also -------------- Ramey was just as fast in SS in the dry as ASP and SM2 were at National's in 03
Maybe it's really all about just drving the car !!!!
Besides just looking for a setup that is fast and easy to drive-----
I thought I found it with the 710's, but you know------oh well !

The answer is go for it ... as long that is as you stay in Utah and Danny stays east. I run in the same region as him and I'm pretty sure he'd beat me up in an H stock Honda Civic! The guy's car's not only phenonally prepared, he's simply a spectacular driver.
BTW, to show he's not a one trick pony, he and partner Larry Mallott prepared (not drove) the #8 place One Lap Car this year. A stock displacement 660 RWHP Z06 that won top honors on the dry skid pad. They know how to make Corvette's handle. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Hey, I don't suppose the article mentions which headers he's using? Somebody mentioned on Z06vette.com that he was doing a big back-to-back test - I'm wondering which he ended up which.

What you guys don't realize is that Danny Popp has a very fast old 72 LT-1 Vette that he learned to drive autocross in before he ran a car that does some of the chores for him. I say that anyone who drives as well as Danny in an old Vette can outdrive anyone in a car that requires less preception than the old Vette with it's lack of ABS, fuel injection and other "driver aids".

Jeff, Is the carbon Hardbar available to us mortals so I can replace my steel hardbar. I'm sure I will be faster-right? The artical did a great layout for all Danny's sponsers. Since my shocks are not back for the BSP car, my wife and I will drive the Z06 this weekend on used up GY GSCS tires. Let's see, if I call John at CCW for those wide wheels and new Hoosiers, new ported TB, long tubes, reprogram the coumputer, new shocks, new springs. new bars? Um? $$$$$ I guess we will drive it the way it is for now-stock... Its still a blast.

Danny is definely a great driver and a cool guy. I was lucky enough to meet him at my 1st autox event this year. He came to the OVR #29 event in April and was 5 secs faster than the 2nd place car in ASP. He also missed FTD by 0.1 sec to a Formula 4 car. I agree that he would be fast no matter what the car was.

How much do the hardbars weigh, anyway? I got my car weighed in Farmington, and I'm trying to figure out what the various components weigh...

He definetly has his own ideas and shares them all in the article. I can't remember which headers he uses but I had never heard of them and yes he is in the process of testing 8 different theaders for Ecklers which is one of his sponsors. Ecklers is going to start putting together specific packages designed by Popp for specific applications.
Some highlights of his set up. T1 rear bar, stock Z06 front bar, Ecklers de cambered light weight 1000# front and 680#(same rate as stock Z06 for rear) rear springs, 18" front wheels 17"rear wheels, VPB's bushings, T1 end links on front and rear bars, Hawk HP Plus pads, Melrose Smooth Flow 1 3/4 Headers with 3" Collectors, Katech TB, Vararam intake, B&M shifter, Quarter Master clutch and flywheel. PCM programing 402 RWHP, 7300 rpm rev limit.
Alignment settings; -1.75 front camber,1/16 toe out front, 5.5 degrees caster, 1.25 rear camber,1/16 toe in rear.
The car currently weighs 3080#'s (thanks to that 3# hardbar) I think my 4 point must weigh at least 80#'s my car weighs 3150

FYI, our old '01 ASP car weighed 2960# in '02 race trim, 1/4 tank, hawker battery, stock seats, no harness bar, light flywheel, stock clutch, T1 bars, stock springs, penskes, LGM LT's, no mufflers, smaller front tires, and put down 390 rwhp and 393 ft/lbs with an '01 cam
Once Danny get's 'good' headers on, watch his hp jump!

This must be a first--a magazine doing a feature article on an Alien...
Because the way he drives, he MUST be from another Planet!!!
Seriously, he's not only a phenom as a driver, but he's always so helpful & genuinely wants to help one improve their driving/setup. Paul Lasinski @ Ecklers is also very helpful, and shares openly what they've found that works.
He's found the most HP so far w/ the TPIS headers(glad, because that's what I run as well), although he's not quite done testing yet--we'll see...

Ditto on Danny, a great driver and always ready to help out a Corvette pilot in need.
