Default Where to mount external GPS (Qstarz BT-Q818XT)

I put track addict on my old phone and purchased a Qstarz BT-Q818XT to go with. It works well together on a neighborhood loop where I just let is set on the dashboard. Any recommendations on mounting the Qstarz for track usage? I plan to use velcro to tape it somewhere. I was thinking either somewhere on the dash or top of the window. Likely either will work fine but if someone has some experience with it I would appreciate the advice.

I had double sided taped an external powered radio antenna to the top of the window in my old car but the sun caused it to keep falling off. It had a wire which prevented it from falling that the Qstarz won't have. I would prefer it not to go flying through the car!

Thanks,
Mark

Hi, I mounted mine on the dash like you mentioned, using adhesive backed velcro. It works well, just make sure it is mounted close enough to you that you can turn it on when belted in. I made that mistake. Mounted so I cannot reach it with my harnesses buckled.

I just put mine in the cup holder next to the shifter. It hasnt fallen out or lost a signal yet.

Same here. I've been doing it for years without issue.

Cup holder is easy enough. Good to know it does not need to be on dash to work well. I also have a spot where I velcroed a throttle controller to the right of the steering wheel. It was acting up so I removed it. Think I'll slap some velcro on the back of the Qstarz and try that spot or just use the cup holder.

Thanks,
Mark

I still have my BT818 from 15 years ago and it works great. Mine is in the dash so it isn't visible. No problems with signal and it still gets really good accuracy.

I use Velcro on the back face of the transponder, and just stick it by the middle of the carpet in the trunk. It never moves and has been very accurate.

Tested on my neighborhood street with trees in some spots. Track addict. Qstarz set to 5hz with smoothing which seems to work better than 10hz without as far showing the path of the car. Statistics are second lap.

On top of dash:3.0m / 2.5m (avg)
Vertical to right of steering wheel (old throttle controller spot): 3.2m / 2.6m (avg)
Cup holder with lid closed: 5.0m / 2.8m (avg)

Rare snow and ice on the road today. I'll try the trunk carpet approach next weekend. I expect that to work very well but you do have the issue with turning on and off. Can you just leave this on all day for two days of a HPDE and not run out of charge? Turn it off over night but leave it on during the day.

Thanks,
Mark

Mine definitely lasts for a weekend. Most of the time I forget to turn it off at the end of the day Saturday so it stays on the whole time.

As I had a C5 Z06, I zip tied it to the grab handle on the passenger side of the I/P. Tight enough so it didn’t move, loose enough so I could wiggle it in and out.
