C6z - Who Unplugs Steering Wheels Position Sensor?
Hey fellow racers,
When I am on the road course i put the car into competitive driving mode. However I read a couple of times that people disconnect the steering wheel sensor to disable the active handling as they are afraid of false interventions or a bad / false reading tire pressure sensor.
is this a valid concern?
Second question: With unplugged steering wheel sensor only ABS is active, as AH doesn't have the information of the intended direction?
Thanks a lot!

I've never run into an issue with TPMS in my C6Z. (Track use only.) Not to say I won't though, so I'm all ears. Where do you disconnect the steering wheel sensor?

if you NEVER have wheels with sensors on your car, you'll eventually have problems. I've gotten by for seemingly years without problems, but eventually the car fights back.
There are already lots of old threads on this.............

Unplugged mine a few months ago after reading up on the subject. I leave mine unplugged 100% of the time. Daily Drive, Autocross, Track. I didn't want to risk unexpected and unwanted intervention. My ABS still works, I tested for it to make sure. It is the one aid I want to have. TC is also still functional and you can still flip it on and off.

Danny Popp recommends doing it for autocross in a C5Z to help with bias and not get Ice Mode SO easily...
I do it for autocross and plug it back in. I don't know if that makes a big difference or if I have learned to drive around Ice Mode.

Like Everyone else, I put my base c6 in a large drift with everything off by use of AH/TC switch and it still kicked in
so i unplug steering wheel switch for hpde

I've been autoxing and hillclimbing my C5 for10 + years and never had a problem until this year. Once at an autox and once at a track. I have mine unplugged all the time now.

Hey all,
Thanks for the input. Its a simple thing and the most important ABS still functions. So for me that's a no brainer on track from now on.
Thanks again!!

For those of you who leave it unplugged, do you get any codes/lights/error messages?

Yes, several. DIC messages are "Service Vehicle Soon," "Service Active Handling," and "Service Tire Monitor" if you have no TPMS like me. Instrument cluster has the AH and TPMS lights on. Doesn't affect driving at all - mine is unplugged 100% of the time. You do still have to manually disable traction control.

I tracked my C6Z06 for many years in Competitive driving mode in advanced HPDE groups. Yes the active handling will kick in once in a while, but I always liked the extra security since it was a street/track car. I've recently converted the car to a pure track/race car with a full cage and have run this past season with the the steering sensor unplugged. (no more tire sensors) It's faster with no nannies, but also a new learning curve in that the car can and will spin if you overdue it without the electronics helping.

I have tpms sensors in my track wheels. I’ve never tracked a car that had any nannies before but kinda like having ‘competition mode’ there as a safety blanket. I’ve leaned into it a couple times.
This, after a decade or more of W2W racing and 4 decades of tracking other cars.
when I first got this car, I did a bit of skid pad with it, with everything off, as well as in competition mode. I found it pretty neat how the competition mode just kinda tucked the car back in

best thing i ever did
on my 09 it defaults the TC to off when you start the car. AH is disabled. ABS works normal.
ie its perfect.
you can still turn TC on manually with the button. but it defaults to off.
