Impressions Mustang GT350R

I instructed a friend yesterday afternoon at an SCCA Track Night (street car) event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He has a completely stock 2017 Mustang GT350 and I was VERY impressed with it. Yes, it is heavier than I prefer in a track car, but I feel it is a very capable dual purpose car... street driving and open tracking. I was driving my wife's 2012 Grand Sport on 200 tw tires and I would put Paul's GT350 right there on par with it. His car has more power in a straight line, but the cornering was not far off from our Grand Sport... in complete street trim.
I'd buy it.. not as a dedicated track car, but as a third car to play with.

1:27:90 to 1:28:29. Considering the Mustang is down over 100hp and got slaughtered on the drag race I'd say that's pretty impressive on the Mustang's part. It definitely shines on a road course.
Now, the new ZL1 1LE ought to beat it quite a bit more I would think.
Still, the GT350R is a damn impressive car. Mustangs have come a long way.

Yeah, I'm still looking at them, actually made an offer (not taken) on a gt350, the "R" model has stupid market adjustment additions so not paying that.
90% of the lap time difference between the 350 and the 350R is the CF rims & better tires IMO. So I'll "settle" for the 350 if need be and mod it a little.
I have been "offered" a 350 for sticker & 3k but passed.

Click to 17:03 for your answer. With Randy Pobst behind the wheel it was VERY close.

a group of us (SuperMiata racers and Vette owners) bought 4 GT350/R in the last 6 months. Car is deceptively fast, I could of swear my C5 z06 is faster on straight line, but it isn't. They drive super easy on track, easier than c5z06 and c6z06. Power builds up over the rpm range (to 8,250). Not much torque down low. so putting power down is easy.
pricing: GT350 have been discounted to ~$1-3k off MSRP. GT350R is still going for $5k over. very location dependent: California is most expensive, midwest is cheapest.
2 of my videos at WSIR and SoW. This is a stock GT350R, with front camber plates. on stock narrower GT350 aluminum wheels (CF wheels are being admired in my living room, no way I am gonna track a $15k wheels) and on ZL1 1LE tires (Goodyear 3R is 1/3 cheaper than SC2)

I had a 2014 viper and had switched to a Gt350 in the thoughts of maybe some road trips with wife and son. the GT350 was great on the road, sounds amazing and had ok power, but not near the level of the viper. I did one track day with it and maybe its because i didnt know the cup tires well but couldnt get near the viper lap time. I was not comfortable on the track with it at all, felt its weight. 7 months later i bought a Z06 and i can say its every thing the viper was, but with the added comfort of the mustang.
they still turn my head everytime i see one on the road, but id take a z06 or even grandsport before another one.

Safety Car
A friend bought an R and let me drive. Naturally it's 14 years newer than my Z, so I expected it to be good and it was. It isn't particularly fast, but not gutless by any means. That exhaust is intoxicating, seats hold better than the Z, steering is nearly telepathic but has 1000x better feel than my Z. It feels like it hides its weight well until you drop the hammer. I enjoyed it and felt it lived up to its hype. As an FYI Ford's wheel protection package covers the carbon fiber wheels too.

This has to be the first time Ford has the upper hand in the powertrain department, especially NA, since I started caring about cars (roughly the second LT1 era of the early 90s).
Grand Sport with the 350R engine would be the perfect car.

While we are fantasizing...current Grand Sport with an LS7, maybe tuned up a bit to 525-550HP!

I'd much rather the 350R engine for sure, but yes, the LS7 (with valve issue resolved) would be much better than the LT1. It's honestly baffling the Grand Sport doesn't have 500hp. 460 is so pedestrian.
