Default #4 Corvette at Roar Before 24 catches fire

I've been going out to the Daytona Speedway Fri/Sat to watch the Roar Before the 24, but haven't gone out today.

However, I just got a text from a fellow Vette owner that is out there, and he just texted me:

"4 Corvette just caught fire and burned up. Pretty bad"

Anybody else out at the track and know anything more?

It's going to be a busy few weeks back in Michigan.

Turn 2 - everyone is just fine.

Thanks, Richard

I just got another text from Butch M that said flames were coming out from behind LF wheel as it was coming out of the infield and up onto the banking. He said the car stopped on the apron and driver got out OK - Marcel Fassler was driving.

From your picture it looks like the car is down on the apron with the high banking in the background.

Butch just sent me a picture of the car coming into the garage area:

Like you say, they'll be busy for the next couple weeks getting things fixed for the Rolex 24!!!

Info I just got says that Pratt&Miller thinks a new high pressure fuel pump they were trying failed.

That's just second-hand info, but from sources that have just talked with P&M. And of course that may or may not be the full cause.

Below Marcel Fassler is running back to the car with a fire extinguisher:

And then you can see him discharging the extinguisher onto the fire - credit to motorsport.com:

Here's the full Motorspots.com article. #3 sidelined until they can figure out the cause of the fire, and with only the last session remaining, I'm sure that's a wrap for Corvette at the Roar.

Disappointing as a longtime Corvette Racing Team fan. At least no one was injured. P&M and Corvette Racing is the BEST in the business and they will be back stronger and faster for the '17 Rolex 24!

2 Questions:

Where it the IMSA safety crew?

What happened to the on-board fire extinguisher system?

At Daytona, I'm pretty sure the DIS fire crews are the first responders.

The onboard system would have sprayed engine, interior, and fuel cell area, it's generally used as a last resort. Better to focus an extinguisher, than to make even more work cleaning other parts of the car.
