The V1 now has an upgrade that does filter out the K band from other cars.

If you roll through a right on red, they bang you for $80.
They actually watch the video to see if your car completely stops. For those of us with manual transmissions, our foot is not on the brake like an automatic.

If you really need the arrows on the V1, my friends, you are asleep at the wheel.
You should be totally alert while driving and use the "leap frog" method of high speed interstate travel. Do not go under bridge overpass or pass any blind merge at high speed WITHOUT having a car within 1/2 mile ahead of you. The cop will always tag the car ahead of you first. If your radar does not go off, keep the hammer down and blow by the underpass or merge at 30 over the limit (review all states speed limits for reckless driving, some are 20mph for reckless).
The arrows on the V1 are a joke and offer nothing more than a distraction. If you are adept at high speed travel and are accustomed to the general police tactics, you'll toss your V1 and go for the Escort brand.
There is no need to use arrows to see what is tripping your radar off to the side. What a joke. You should have seen that already or recognized that you approached a hiding place blind (or without a leap frog car in front of you).
Also, place a laser blinder on your car for states using Lidar and use WAZE. Download this app onto your phone and thank me later.
The speed limits in this country are for revenue generation only. No interstate highway should have less than a 75mph limit in my opinion.

If you don't understand why the arrows are useful, then you're missing the point. I've had many times when a cop pulls on to the highway some distance behind me, turns around, or is on a side road as I pass by. In all cases the arrows are useful as you have a much better idea where they are when the their car is not actually in view or too far behind to recognize them in the mirrors.

I've driven thousands of miles with the V1 and it is horrid. For the casual speeder, sure, it is a great tool. The arrows take place of the road-going driver awareness and give the casual speeder what they are looking for-- an excuse to not pay attention. Speeding is more than that, you have to pay attention as well as use the best counter-measure tools available.
The V1 arrows are a gimmick for someone that is adept at high-speed driving.
The V1 arrows are nothing more than a distraction because, visually, I've already determined the location of the bogey. Especially if the bogey is off to the side-- how can you not see a police car off to the side before he hits you with radar or laser? If that situation occurs, you are not driving smart and not driving by the basic tenant of "leap frog". Never ever pass at a high rate of speed past an over/under-pass or merge without having a bait car ahead of you within a reasonable line of site. The cop will always tag that person first-- and that is your warning to slow down.
Plus, if you do not see a merging or turning highway patrol car ahead of time-- shame on you.
If the bogey is behind you, then you obviously are A) not driving fast enough, or B) you were not paying attention to your mirrors as C) you may have already passed the cop.
One of the other major reasons the V1 is only for casual speeders is that it has no visual verification of the actual frequency of the radar. Guess what? There is an "expert" mode on the real Escort detectors that will show you sideband intercepts within a particular band of radar. If you don't know what I'm typing here, you are the "casual speeder" I mentioned earlier.
Escort detectors in the "Expert" mode will display 2-3-4 signals if they are at different frequencies. The distance of each signal is also displayed. Having a bogey counter on the V1 is a joke. The Escort handles this with dead-on accuracy.
The example I use is very real world and from my personal experience is another major reason as to why the V1 was stuffed in the trash: Construction Zones.
Many states will set up radar signs through construction zones. If a long construction zone, they will deploy a few radar signs through that section. The V1 gives you the "ahead" arrow and may show you a 1 or 2 on the bogey counter.
The Escort will show you the exact frequency-- and here is the defining moment-- the jerkoffs that buy these radar signs for the DOT's of the various states buy ALL THE SAME DAMN FREQUENCY RADAR systems for these ridiculous signs.
Not being the casual speeder, you'll also know that these construction zones are not labeled very well for being "active" or "inactive". If a cop pulls you over in these zones, you are getting at least double the fines just because he can and because you weren't paying attention.
Again, the Escort shows the exact frequency of the sign's radar. Guess what, if a sideband activation of radar shows up... SLOW DOWN. Any additional frequency that is displayed next to a known "radar sign" is most definitely a cop. If you were a cop, would you not hide in the next cutoff behind a radar sign? Yeap, happens all the time. The Escort will warn you of this in clear detail by displaying the "always on" radar sign. Then, if the hidden cop is using instant on radar just beyond the sign, your leap frog car in front of you will be tagged and your Escort will pick this up about 1 mile in advance and will display the additional signal and amplitude. The V1 cannot do this, period. You have to drive slowly through construction zones (even when no one is working).
I've driven through many construction zones with the V1 and it was not possible to hammer down through any of them. There was no way to know if one of the bogeys was a cop or just another radar sign. The Escort clearly details this for you and gives all of the confidence when in the "Expert" mode.

Depends how old your V1 is. The highest price I have seen for an upgrade is $199 and thst was for a 10 year old V1

I just had an instance yesterday where the arrows were of good use. Driving on the highway a state trooper past the opposite way. He did a u-turn behind me for the only reason to start going the opposite direction to check on coming traffic (not to stop anyone). Now he's behind me and I know it because yes I was paying attention. BUT he was not in site in my mirrors. I keep getting an occasional Ka signal for a while, but I know for sure that it's still the trooper behind me because the V1 tells me that. I know that it's not another trooper coming toward me.

Wow, you think I haven't driven on the road before? Or you are so full of yourself that you think you can be aware of everything going on around you all the time while on the road? You crack me up. Wow, just wow....

My point though was that without the arrows, you can't tell if all the Ka alerts are coming from front or behind. Maybe I should ask since I haven't used the newest Escort detectors, is there a way to know if there is are Ka signals coming from in front and behind you?? (assuming they are not occuring at the same time)
So I can't as easily get ahead without taking more risk (since I can't go as fast) if I can't be sure all of the Ka alerts I'm seeing are from *only* behind me.
The arrows are just one more tool to use since there is no way to be 100% protected. They provide a bit more "situational awareness". I commented about this originally just because I feel completely dismissing the directional arrows as a gimmick is not correct. Not because I think it's the be all to end all feature or something.
#35
Yup, I knew that. Although most of them are K bank fortunately (since most guns I see these days are Ka). Sounds like there may be a way to weed them out with the newer detectors though. I either need to upgrade my V1 or get something new maybe.

If you all would just accept the fact that you will never be able to drive at the level Sccacornerworker does, then the thread would be a lot easier. They clearly made the transporter and cannonball movies based on his exploits.

I have constantly debated getting a higher end detector Escort Or Valentine are the ones I randomly think about buying. But I really would like something that isn't going to go off constantly when I'm behind some fancy car that wants to drive itself.

To answer Talon's question about the "behind signal". What is behind you does not matter. If you cannot see the car behind you, don't worry about it. The radar gun is NOT accurate at one mile (typical blip on the radar per se). By the audible and visual indicators on the Escort "Expert" mode you can easily distinguish far away bogeys.

For this reason, the side arrows and rear arrows are useless. Situational awareness of the driver can more easily discern police presence prior to being tagged from the side or from behind.
The Construction Zone syndrome and radar signs are the main reason that the Escort brand while set in the "Expert" mode is far superior.
My write-up above detailed how police routinely will tuck in between 2 radar signs in a construction zone.
- The V1 may or may not show you the an accurate number of bogeys. Either way, you MUST slow down while the V1 is blaring off the windshield because you have no way of discerning the band of radar being blasted toward you.
- The Escort in "Expert" mode will detail the number of bogeys AND the exact frequency/distance of each. The radar signs are always on the same frequency. So, while blasting through an in-active construction zone (I'm not condoning blasting thru an active work zone ever), the Escort will give differing audible and visual alerts when detecting side-band radar contrary to the radar sign. This is invaluable.
There is no way you can continue at 30mph over the limit with a V1 with multiple bogeys. The Escort gives you the detail of the exact radar band(s) and you can make an instant decision whether to keep hammer down or slow down.
The construction zone driving is so frustrating for me that it became the #1 detractor away from the V1. It plainly is not reliable enough to report exactly what is up ahead.

Escort radar detectors have very poor metering ramp up and generally will be at full alert while at a good distance from the source of the radar signal. The reason why Escort radar detectors do this is because Speed Measurement Laboratories an organization that provides training and expert testimony to law enforcement rated radar detector sensitivity by the signal strength meter on the radar detector. If one detector detected a radar signal at 2 miles from the source and has the strength meter at 2/10 and the other radar detector was at 10/10 they rated the second detector as more sensitive. It didn't matter if the first radar detector initially detected the signal 7 miles farther away and that the second radar detector started detecting the signal at 2.5 miles from the radar source. The V1 has a much more lineal rampup that is more accurate than the Escort in determining distance to the radar source.
The v1 when pared with app android phone running the free app YaV1 will list each radar frequency, signal strength and direction.
I have 6 escort radar detectors and two V1s. My first goto radar detector is the V1.
