Default Window mounts for your phone

How many of you use a window mount for the inside of the car for your phones? I have found quite a few, but the last thing I want is the phone flying around in the car on the track. I would like to use it for the harrys lap timer and use the camera at the same time. Phone is an S5 active as well.

Panavise, but some organizers do not allow suction mount.

True. I am pretty sure our SCCA region does, as many guys use them. It won't be for HPDE since there isn't a track like that in hawaii. Thanks for the input. I will look it up.

Here is a test I did today with hlt, motox phone,obd2, and external gps.

I had to modify the mount a little, but it's solid now on a VERY rough autox course.

How much did all that run? I would like to use my goPro, but she it comes to doing all the overlaying stuff, me and the computer don't get a long. That is my main motivation for wanting to use my phone.

A good suction cup won't fail, even in racing conditions. However, you should also consider unpredictable non-racing conditions. A hard impact could easily turn your phone into a missile.

Counter argument is that racing is full of lots of risks-- ultimately it's up to you to determine which ones you're ok with.

To answer the other question, I put the RAM mount through its paces in HPDE & TT. Only about $35 on Amazon right now:

Super stable, never once worried about it coming off even when I went up on the bumpers. Here's how it held up on one of my TT laps last year:

I went on a bunch of searching and settled on slip grip. I have two events using it and it's performing great.

That is exactly what I am looking for, thanks. My next question is, does it work on more than just iPhones? I have an S5 active and it is a bit bigger than an iPhone.

With HLT the overlay process is sort of built in to the app, you click on a command in the app and it does it.

Phone ???
obd $10 amazon
gps $160 amazon
Mount about $25 amazon
HLT about $15 google play

I gave up on my GoPro for now, battery life sucked & never got into data overlay with Go Pro. I may play with it as a 2nd camera later.

Time to get all that stuff to work many, many hours. There are many phone settings & many HLT settings to get it all going and the android ver. of HLT is a little "buggy" but the author is responsive (via forum) to help questions.

I just received one of these from the Fedex guy yesterday and was able to mount a Samsung Note 3, no external case, with a little (not much) room to spare. I believe the Note is bigger than the S5, so you should be good to go.

When i started tracking cars in 2010 a number of places wouldn't let me run suction cups inside but everyone i run with now, even places that didn't before, do now.

The ram mount works, it isn't perfect though. I definately see more wobble than i would like and it holds the phone too far from the windshield. You can see in the video above the camera trying to focus on the hood or the marks on the windshield. Under braking you get vibration that i didn't get with my old tomtom mount either. But I wouldn't be concerned with the safety of it. It is really heavy so if it did ever come off it would HURT!

I have the large suction cup (3.5" I think?) Ram mount and cannot pull it off the windshield, it is ridiculously strong. The phone end of the arm does wobble a bit though so it's not perfect but it's functional and certainly isn't going anywhere.

I got one of the Ram Mounts off of Amazon with the "X" type of grip for the phone for autocrossing. I stuck it to the window on the passenger side the day I got it (way in the upper right)....and it's been stuck there nicely every since (at least 5 autocross events). Works well, and has a bit of a shock type of flex in the rubber mounting that might help with smoothing out the bumps. Works really well, although to get the camera at the angle I wanted it, I had to mount the phone with the screen towards the mount (that way, the camera isn't shooting with the mount in frame). The X grip will probably fit just about any phone or similar device.
