I need to install a 4 point in my 99 FRC for the up coming hillclimb season. Is this were most people mount the main hoops?
Is there a location on the floor or the shelf that would work as well/or stronger. The bar I put in my C4 was made to mount to the floor but I modified it to mount up on the stronger shelf.

I build the bars my self from kits from http://www.swracecars.com/ I don't know all that much about the C5 frame so any help would be great.

The cross beam behind the seats is just thin sheet metal and isn't designed to handle any vertical loads. You have to take the bar to the frame as done here or weld it to a gusset welded to the B pillar which is designed to take a vertical load. You also have to be careful with welding around the cross beam if the gas tanks haven't been removed as the fuel crossover tube is right under the beam.

To answer Bill, yes. But there are FAR more knowledgeable people on here than me when it comes to the structural integrity of a C5. I am sure more of them will chime in, but they will probably say the same thing as Bill.

Good progress today: midpipe wrap and tunnel shield. For anyone wanting to know how much wrap to buy, I used 130' and went from the front of the pipe to about halfway up the "U" over the halfshafts. I could have easily used more to go all the way to the muffler.

And WHY on earth does the tunnel plate have THIRTY-SIX bolts? Is it structural?

I'm sure you guys have seen these, but thought I'd share just in case. I had a longacre mirror before and it worked well, but I picked up a Racer's Allview Mirror after seeing a few floating around and Jerry reccommending it. Significantly better than anything I've tried. I was able to get mine used off of ebay from a NASCAR team for like $20 or $25. I think it's def. worth the money if you are going W2W.

The one time I actually used my air ratchet was for those bolts.

I used mine as well. I can't remember the last time I had it out, but after the second one with a ratchet, I said screw it.

3/8" drive 12V cordless impact does the trick - and quick.

Kevin you did a much prettier job with the heat shield than I did I used scraps so I didn't have to buy another $80 sheet or whatever it was from CV Products!



As for the heat shield... yes it is structural to a point. Upgrading it to the thicker tunnel plates will increase the torsional rigidity of the car, but now that you have a cage it's worthless IMO. I pust out my air ratchet and long extension for futzing with those.

EDIT - What are the bolts/nuts sticking through the floor for?

They are the eye bolts for my harnesses.

The ones coming straight down through the seat stud strip were used in the past for my lap belts. They will now be used for my sub belts which used to be bolted to my seat base.

The one coming through the tunnel wall will now be used for my lap belt since BJ welded in a reinforcement plate against the tunnel. On the door side, I will now use the OEM seatbelt bolt as the mounting point for that lap belt.


Thanks for the compliments. I spent $110 on a 36"x48" sheet of thermal material from Summit and still have some left over.

Wrapping stainless (esp 304) is generally a no-no, but the temps are lower in the mid-pipe vs the headers so you should be alright.

C5s (and I guess C6s) benefit greatly from wrapping the mid-pipe. It keeps the clutch hydraulics cooler which allow them to work better along with acting as a poor man's trans/diff cooler by keeping some of the radiant heat out of them.
