Default 5.3 can work

Here is my rig. I have a little trouble towing on the level. I do loose speed climbing a grade. I can get around the midwest OK with this, but If I lived in a more mountainous area, it wouldn't tow to my satisfaction. I wish I had a bit more grunt. When replacing this tow vehicle, I will certainly look for more torque. But this vehicle can work, just be patient. I have moved the car back several inches to reduce tongue weight and level the trailer some.

2005, 2 WD Avalanche, 5.3, auto, 3.73. Towing a heavy wood deck trailer, the '90 racer and probably 600+ # of box, tire rack and extra gear.

Axle weights were: Front: 2440#, Rear: 4580#, Trailer axle: 5660#
I think I still need to adjust my tongue weights. I don't use it a lot, so I'm still trying to figure it out.

Selling your flyrods is, unfortunately, only the beginning...

BTW my 1997 Suburban 4x4, 5.7 with 3.73 gears, bought new in Espanola, NM, now has 150K. Towed with it some - lost transmission at ~125K towing furniture back from Wisconsion. Towed car trailers/horse trailers a couple if times. Needs more brakes (they really do stink with my 33 inch tires) and more torque to pull a car trailer. Will keep it till it dies of old age, if only to **** off my tree hugger canoe/kayak buddies, since it seats 9 and is paid for. I do not recommend it for anything other then light open trailers. But it does work, with patience,

looks low in the rear. Did you get a weight distributing hitch for it?

That avalance needs a weight dist hitch.

I have an 03 GMC Denali XL with the 6.0L motor. (1500 AWD)
I towed an open trailer for 5 years, NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM !!
And I was loaded with 5900 lbs, tools, fuel, etc, in the trailer.

I climbed the hills of POCONO, NO PROBLEM.
It stops fine because I have a brake controller that works.
I towed at 80 MPH, no problem.

If you setup the hitch properly with a good brake controller, your fine.
Currently have 120,000 miles. drivetrain is perfect.
