clear tape? for paint protection
I really hate looking at blue tape, and i've seen it fly off some cars at the track. A few guys had some clear wrapping stuff that they stuck over the bumpers and such. I forget what they called or where they got it from. Anyone know?

Transparent shelf paper from Walmart (con-tact brand). $5 for a 9' x 2' roll. Leaves nary a smudge and peels off incredibly easy. Poor man's clear bra. Since I hardly ever drive the car except to the track, I just leave the stuff on most of the time. Keep it on the lower areas of the front clip, mirrors, and rear-facing parts of the front and rear fenders. Change it out every 2-3 track days. From any distance you really can't tell it's on there. I frequently wash the car with the stuff on . . . I've never seen the slightest mark I can blame on this stuff. You can pick the stuff up next time you're at Walmart gettin' your M1.

Leave it on, it's about 2mm & stands up MUCH BETTER than blue tape & other thin stuff. Clear so it barely shows.
It's like the 3m clear bra stuff. I put it on the lip of my trunck also for protecting fron putting stuff in/out of trunk.
It's about a buck a foot for 2 inch wide but lasts for years.

Great, thanks guys. Have a track day on tuesday so i will probably just hit up walmart for this one. The first track event i did i didn't tape up anything but the only new damage i found was 1 rock chip on my hood. My quarters were already sand blasted.

You making fun of me? ............................
Jeff England kindly dubbed me as the Corvette body condom connoisseur since I used to wrap up nearly the entire car, but I'm slowly getting away from it the more track days I go to, but I still like to protect the easy areas.
I used a new clear poly tape at Barber and Road ATL with very good results. It stayed on the car for 2 1/2 weeks and came off with no residue. I bought it at Ace Hardware. Looks like this:
I used it on the headlight lids, top of the front fenders and behind each wheel well.
If you want to protect the hood, use clear contact paper. I used it for an entire season last year with great results before I swapped the hood for track use. I've never had a problem with it coming loose since I tuck it under the nose bra (you can pick one up pretty cheap) and there are no exposed corners to the wind. Through all the searching (and I searched them all), I found that by far the best contact paper to use was at Walmart. The brand name is Con-tact and it's 18" wide x 24' long. The roll itself is wrapped in cellophane with a red label on it that reads:
CLEAR
TRANSPARENT
.
CON-TACT BRAND
I've never had a problem with residue that was diffucult to take off. Usually, it only leaves a waxy mark in some places, but it comes off with a quick wipe of any type of wax (even the spray on and wipe off kind). I've even left it on for a full 2 weeks between track events with no problem. Best 5 bucks I ever spent.
Here's the best picture I can find of it online:
