Are cheap aftermarket wheels safe for HPDEs?
I need another set of wheels just for racing. (HPDE). And I was wondering if the cheap aftermarket reproduction wheels are safe? Also what about aftermarket lug nuts they generally come with?

I have been using a set of AFS ZR1 style wheels since 2000 with no problems.

track wheels on a budget
Run 2005-2007 C6 OEM wheels. Super light and cheap. Going for $300 all day long on the forum. If you get the good ones they are US or Italian made. If you hit the curbing too hard at the track and warp one, guess what, you pay a $100 for a new wheel.
This for me has been the best way to save money and has allowed me to run extra track events. For guys on a budget, this is the way to go.
On the flipside, when i get to the point, where I can go all out on equipment, you better believe that CCW's or BBS full on race wheels will be the the car.

we sometimes miss the obvious, buy repo's for the street and use your OEM's for the track. With repo's you have basically 1000 choices and your OEM's are stronger and lighter for the track

OEM wheels are too cheap and available on the forum to mess with cheap aftermarket wheels of unknown strength for the track. Do you want to drive 150 MPH on CHEAP WHEELS ????? I sure as hell don't.

all wheels crack eventually if you beat on them enough. the key is regular INSPECTION.
even the fancy name high dollar race wheels crack. although they maintain their high reputation because they replace them for customers.

I havent had any trouble with the $100 black motorsport wheels.
They are heavy though. Now days stock rims sell for about the same price.

The stock C5 and C6 wheel sizes limit your tire choices considerably. I use the GS wheels since I can get used tires for them. The C5Z wheel sizes aren't bad but the standard C5 wheels are to narrow. Based on C6 tire sizes I imagine the C6 wheels are too narrow as well. Better a cheap quality wheel that is the right size than a wheel that isn't the right size.

It is hard to beat stock C5 ZO6 rear wheels (for front and rear). Fairly light and very dependable. They also clear the Wilwood Big Brake setup.
For the mini tub setup you can always have Weldcraft widen a set of wheels if you wanted to go bigger than 315's in the rear.
