Default power steering pump ? Upgrade?

So I toasted my PS pump over in Sin Citys vulgar little sister (pahrump). High RPM = fluid blowing out from around the mount = fluid on tires and cabin filled with smoke.

(Drove it home - no problem = keep the RPM below 2K)

I have no idea how old the pump is - it's on an 86 C-4. so do I replace it with a stock or similar unit - or will my occasional autocross and HDPE doom a new unit to an early death - If that the case - do I need to go with a race unit?

If you don't have one, you should also invest in a PS cooler

I can't speak specifically for the C4, but in a C5, the cooler definitely helps, and I run the resevoir just full enough to keep the system full. The fluid expands when hot, and if you fill it to the full mark, it seems to go everywhere and make a mess.

I had the beginnings of a bad pump on our 90C4. It started in Pahrump three years ago as well. The car has the cooler and the pump had less than 5000 miles. I put a new pump on and changed to Redline oil and no problems since. It has seen many track days and three years of auto-x. I would suggest flusing oil through the system a couple of times to clean out any particles. I used a cooking baster and and sucked the fluid out of the resevoir a few times.

I have not personally tried their products but several C4 members whose

was a recent thread about their aftersales practices, too - very favorable.
