Looking for a quality forum guy to install a modest system in my C5. I got an estimate from a shop here in town but it seems high and I want to make sure I get a good install. They recomended the following AMP and SUB:
AMP- MRD-M301
SUB- Image Dynamics IDQ10
I was originally going to do just the sub and AMP but thought I may do the HU too if I can get a good price.
I am sound proofing the car. I did the whole back hatch area with Dynamat Extreme. I laid down 2 and sometimes 3 layers. Took (2) 36sq ft bulk packages just for the back. Sounds very quiet now. I did the passenger door yesterday(with Frost King)both the door itself and the inside panel. I'm doing the drivers side tomorrow. I will also be doing the wheel wells with frost king AND insulation batting in the hollow areas.
I live in So.Cal(San Diego). And can assist with the install.
Thx, Mike

Installing that yourself shouldn't be that hard. I'm also not a big fan of adapters but if you want to keep the stock head unit then it's whatcha gotta do. I have never installed a system in a vette but have done multiple systems in my other cars. If you are familiar with taking the interior apart I'd be up for helping you install your system.
I'm in LA though.

If you do new head unit, then you will have to upgrade the speakers... I hate adaptors... ugh...
Hey thx for the help. I just finished doing the doors and wall behind seats and the sound system feels like I just upgraded it! Just got back from a ride w/ the wife and she is drilling me, asking how much this "new system" cost. Seriously, sounds sooo much better now. Very quiet, almost studio like and I still have not done the floor, tunnel or the wheel wells yet. It's unlike any Corvette I have ever been in before.
What head unit would you recomend? Maybe do a DVD thing but I want to have a CD changer so I can have access to multiple CD's like I do now with my factory 12.
thx, MIke

Well, the dvd thing will cost you some cash. Pioneer has a nice one; AVH-P6600DVD, with touch-screen, navigation and an obd-II interface which will let you visually monitor anything that the obd-II monitors. That'll run you about 1100 I believe (plus th cd changer) http://www.carmedia1.com/en-us/dept_164.html
If you want to go with something a little more subtle (less expensive) you could just go with a good old fashion cd player and cd changer. There are good units out there for as little as $250 http://www.carmedia1.com/en-us/dept_101.html
Keep in mind, if you want to get a new head unit you'll have to most likely get new speakers (i'm not sure if they have an adapter to interface the stock speakers with an aftermarket head unit....anyone want to chime in on this one?)
Or you could go the route i'm going; ax the whole head unit idea and install a computer with a 7" touch screen monitor flush mounted where the head unit once was. This will give you a harddrive full of music, obd-ii interface, navigation, ls1 edit... I'll even be able to check my email on long trips

Scott FX, do you have an equipment listing for the system you are installing?
Thanks
Well, I am kinda just piecing this together as money permits (engine rebuild comes first). I have a 7" screen at my house right now but it's not vga so I think I'm going to purchase a liliput 7" touchscreen with vga.
For the computer I was going to build one but I recently came across a laptop that I may end up using. I will have to look into a usb soundcard though.
the amps... I have a 5 channel eclipse amp that i'll use for now. But I plan on not using my rear speakers (since it's a vert) so i may eventually upgrade to a phoenix gold titanium 4 chan amp. (bridged 2 channels for the sub)
The speakers...
3 way components in the doors: jl audio XR653-CS
1-10 inch jl sub in the center storage compartment.
Thats as far ahead as i've planned. of course there will be navigation but besides the gps antenna, it's all software based.

I am a huge fan of Alpine.
They have DVD head with flip out monitor, touch screen, lotsa features, and you can get the DVD/CD changer!
it's RETAIL is 1500.00, but the street will be less, it's the Alpine IVA-D300. it has a built in DVD player, and can be attached to Nav and a bunch of other things...
The changer is the DHA-S680... 6 disk DVD/CD/DVD-R/CDR player. pricy at 900.00 RETAIL, but I am sure it can be found cheaper.
if you have the money go with the eclipse unit... you'll have to modify the radio surround to fit a double din unit but it'll look factory. I think it runs for about $2300 plus gps receiver/software

Scott, That would be absolutely awesome! How much are we talking about w/ this set-up?

for an amp... $350
speakers...depends on what you want...the jl's I mentioned earlier are about $350/pair or you could get just less expensive pair for about $100-$150/pair
sub $150-$300
you'll also need an amp wiring kit and a sub box (i have plans if you want to builld the box yourself)
I'd be more then willing to help you set this up for next to nothing. I'm handy with wiring and if we need any help with the computer stuff my roommates are computer geeks. (one used to write the tracking guidance systems for missiles, the other one has a cs degree...they are both absurdly intelligent

I have some comp parts from my previouse system. (I build my own systems)Are these desktop comps your are talking about?
I wanted to use an Image Dynamics Sub. I can pick one up on ebay pretty reasonable. Maybe those speakers your talking about too.

They can be desktop components. I think the power supply would be the only thing that would truely be car specific. It will run off of 12v and also not shut down the power when you are cranking the engine. It would probably be best to also get a 2.5 inch hd since they tend to be built to take a little more abuse.
I've never heard an ID sub in person but i hear a lot of people love them.
As far as amps, i've always loved ppi, soundstream, and phoenix gold
If you want to go crazy get a 'tube amplifier'... no these arent bazooka tube amps. they are amps that use vacuum tube drivers. they are supposed to have the best and warmest sound available.
