I have a Polk 10# sealed sub in my car, and I think it sounds pretty good (and tight). But I've been reading quite a bit that he square Kicker is shocking on how hard it can hit. Would it be worth the money (~$200)converting from the Polk to the Kicker???
I'll mount it in the same location (storage bin). In the future, I may consider adding another L5 to the driverside bin...
I just pulled this off the web. So it doesn't look like I'm even in the ballpark.
MTX Thunder 152
37.5 Watts x 2 into a 4 Ohm load with less than 0.05% Thd+N
75 Watts x 2 into a 2 Ohm load with less than 0.1% Thd+N
150 Watts bridged into a 4 Ohm load with less than 0.1% Thd+N
Pick up a JBL600.1. It will make 600+ watts into a 2 ohm load. Less than $200 at ikesound.com. That MTX is a great amp for a set of components.
I don't think you will have enough airspace for the sub in that storage bin though.
Hey lars,if i got that amp would i have to change anything of could i just replace the amps. I want mine a lil louder? what do you think?
Nick, I can't remember, did we run 4 gauge or 8 gauge wiring? The JBL600.1 would need 4 gauge. The extra 200 watts to that sub would make a big difference.
This is a bit off topic. But if I swap my MTX with the JBL in the Vette. Do you know how difficult it will be to add the MTX (and Polk sub with Q-Box) to my BMW 328i convertible? It still have the factory stereo in that car.
I was thinking about this. If you buy a Kicker L5 you have to get the 4 ohm dual voice coil sub so it can be wired at 2 ohms to get the full 600 watts out of the amp.
Nick, in your case, that sub is a 4 ohm single voice coil. So if you bought the JBL600.1, that sub would actually get LESS power that it is getting now.
300 watts instead of 360 from the bridged JBL 180.2
Lars -- I cannot believe the prices at Ike Sound.com!!!!
Lets say since I was planning on going with two subs in the future, I may as well get it once and be done with it.
1. Which would you recommend? Two S10L5-4's or two S10L5-2's? I like very tight hard hitting bass.
2. What amp would you recommend for the above subs?
FYI -- This is my current set-up:
Pioneer 7200H stereo/CD player, MTX Thunder 152 amp for sub, Alpine MRV-F307 V-12 amp for main speakers, Polk EX2540 satellite door speakers, Polk DX9 (6x9) rear speakers, Polk Dx Series 10" sub mounted in sealed storage compartment, Street wires and fuse box, Monster cables, MTX Capacitor, Radio Shack 12V cooling fans with by-pass switch for both amps.
I know this is a little bling-bling, but I wanted two subs to balance out the cargo area... Can this amp run the two subs? Like everyone else, I don't want to have to upgrade down the road.

hmmmm
Kicker has just come out with new square subs, they handle bookoo power.
So, get two JBL 1200.1 for one 10"
You beat me to it.
Here is the scenario, we want 600 watts for each 10" L5.
If you want to run ONE sub, get a JBL 600.1 and a 4ohm DVC sub to wire it at a 2 ohm load.
If you want to run TWO subs, get a JBL1200.1 and two 2ohm DVC subs, wire each of them for a 4 ohm load and each sub will get 600watts. Either amp you choose, make sure to run 4 gauge wire.
That's it! I'm Sold! Thanks for the help and advice!!!
Before I get the car out of storage I'll have the new system in with the 1200.1 and two L5's. I'll place the order in a couple weeks with Ikesound.com.
Now I need to find a shop to install the MTX in the BMW. I'm not brave enough to cut into that wiring...
Very nice! This weekend I'll look around to see if I can find someone to put the MTX in the BMW. For something like this, Best Buy or CC should be able to do the install. I'm not brave enough to do it.
Then-- it is time to place an order for the Kickers and JBL!
lars, i am hoping that adapter comes today and I'll give you a call. I also need to talk to you about what bolts i should keep an eye on and tighten regularly if needed.
