Default Think I found my sub fart problem! My box is TOO big to be ported!

Kicker Recommends a 1.5cu ft box, when going ported, and no larger...my box is 1.95cu ft AND ported! Is there any way I can SEAL up the port? I think if this box was NOT ported, it would hit like CRAZY. But as it's ported, it's really bad.

ported boxes are larger than sealed ones, so just sealing the port will leave you with a sub in a box that's way to big and still won't sound great... what does kicker recommend for a sealed box? you can always cut the box and make it smaller...

Did Kicker say 1.5 including all displacements? Anything that you put in the enclosure including the sub and the port takes away from the total airspace in the enclosure. You can change the box to a sealed one by removing the port and blocking the opening from the inside. Then you can add wood to the interior till you get the correct airspace. Or you can cut the box down to the proper airspace. Looks to me like your box fits well so I would not change that, I would decrease the airspace.

Min Rec Sealed Box Vol (CU. FT.) = .8
Max Rec Sealed Box Vol (CU. FT.) = 3.0
Min Rec Vented Box Vol* (CU. FT.) = 1.25
Max Rec Vented Box Vol* (CU. FT.) = 1.75

So, if it was a SEALED box, it would be PERFECT!

is there any EASY way to seal it? Like, do they make a PLUG for the port?

A 10" Comp VR should work very well in a ported 1.95 cu-ft box if your tuning frequency is correct. The difference between 1.5 and 1.95 is basically inaudible.

What is your tuning frequency?

the xover frequency what the xover lets through and below....ie if you have the xover set at 100hz than 100hz and below will be allowed to go the sub. The tuning frequency is the frequency the port is tuned to. When a ported enclosure is designed you have to determine the frequency in which you want it tuned to. Then build the box and port to the correct specs. You can not just build a box and put a piece a pvc in it and expect it to work to fullest.

No. Box volume and port volume determine the tuning frequency. Tuning frequency is absolutely critical in a ported design.

ok, well, a professional shop built my box, so I assume the port is tuned...
EDIT: Hmm, from the looks of it, my port is WAAY too small! With a tuning frequency of 40hz, it needs a 4.85" diamater port, MINIMUM!

You cannot assume anything. You need to know the specific tuning frequency. You can compute it if you know the port volume and the actual box internal volume (minus driver displacement, port displacement, and bracing displacement).

Where can I go backwards like that? Because it SEEMS like my port is WAY too small! It looks like it should be 4.85" diamter and 12.41" long!

My box is 1.95cu ft (before any displacement factors) and the port is 3" diameter x 8" long...does that sound bad?

After estimating and subtracting your displacements your internal volume is probably about 1.8 cu-ft (assuming your 1.95 volume value is correct). A 3" diameter vent 8" long in that enclosure would tune to about 32 hz. That is actually pretty good.

If the specs you gave me are accurate than the enclosure design is not a problem. I would look for airleaks and/or amp problems.

I came up with 36hz

Yeah well as I said above it is just a rough estimate. WinISD is showing about 32hz with a 1.8 cu-ft box and a 3"x8" round port. It depends on what formulas you use (the formulas found around the WWW do vary a bit). The difference between 32 & 36 hz isn't major anyway. Things like port position in the box and polyfill will also change the tuning frequency. Bottom line is the tuning specs are pretty good. I would not consider the tuning really bad until it starts to get up around 40hz.

I see you are in NJ. Come out to our next Corvette Challenge on Nov 15th. I am car # 6291.
