I'm thinking of upgrading (finally) the sound system in the vert, and I have made up my mind for most components, but I'm struggling with the front speakers. I was thinking of putting Focal 165KS set in there (used it in my previous car - sounded real sweet), but I'm thinking now of maybe putting 2 x 5.25" in the doors (focal). I was wondering if anyone else has ever put 2 of those in the fronts, and how difficult it was.
Oh, for those of you that are wondering about the rest : Alpine CDA-7969 head unit, Phoenix Gold ZX-450 and 2 x Visaton WSP 21S as subs.
I might replace the subs, but for now they'll have to do.
Also, I'm thinking of putting the amp under the passenger seat. How much clearance is available there?
Are you saying two 5.25" in EACH door?
There is plenty of room under the pass. seat if you don't have the power seat option.
I'm going to go with Focal components next time, what model are you looking at?
I am going to something simular in my car. i am either going to use Focal or MB Quart, being negotiated right now. I have Focal Utopias in my truck and love them. Great speaker. Let us know how it works out for you and I am going to posting pics of mine as soon as I start the project.
If I had the $ this is what I would get. 6 1/2" in stock 8" hole and 4" where the stock 3 1/2" was. Stick the tweeter where it sounds best. Get a nice amp and you'll be very happy.

Thanks for the replies already. Yes, I was thinking of 2 5.25" in each door. Would make for some nice kick bass.
I'm thinking of the polykevlar series, or maybe the Utopia 5" subwoofer. Don't have the numbers here by heart.
Damn... I have the power seat option :( Looks like I'll have to think of another location for the amp.
I know there is enough room in the door for a 6.5" and a 4" just using a template. That is basically more than 10.5" of diameter. Two 5.25" would be the same 10.5" diameter, so it should work. I like the idea of using a 5.25 component set and a 5" focal sub for midbass. You could run the components and the subs from a single 4 channel amp.
But also keep in mind the dimensions of the grille. I thought about a 3 way setup but the grille isnt that big without covering more then 1/2 of one of the drivers. I think even the OEM 3" is 1/2 way covered.

You are right about that, the top speaker would be about 1/4 to 1/3 covered. But if you went with the 5" sub on top, it wouldn't matter that much. More of the vocal range would come from the 5.25 mid, and that would not have any obstruction if it were on the bottom.
Yes, I don't think the obstruction of the bass driver would be that much of a problem, since it is not as directional as mids and highs. I just talked to my car audio dealer, and I'm thinking of going for the 130K bass only (still got the tweeter of the series for a 6" set), and a utopia 5WS woofer on each side. Price (here in Belgium) €400 (about $460).
Now I have another problem...
You guys made me think about using one 4 channel amp for the doors. Problem is, I was thinking about using only amp for the entire setup. Not that I don't have the amps, still got a Phoenix Gold ZX450 and two Yamaha YPA-1020 amps laying around, but I would like to make it simple :)
So, if I only use one amp (would probably be the PG), I would have to make it passive for the fronts. This would of course mean creating a passive crossover for it, since we are talking about 3 drivers. I'm thinking of a 2 way system, crossed over at about 3khz (have to check with the tweeters). The 5.25" bass driver can handle 3khz, but the 5WS cannot, so it would roll of naturally at about 2.5Khz.
Or, would I put a low pass filter on the 5WS at about 500 Hz, so it only is servicing the low end (kickbass) together with the other one.
Hi Kurt,
There is a great article about the Focal 5WS in the March 02 issue of Car Audio and Electronics. Take note this a neat and unique woofer. It is a 6 ohm, 4 pound, 5" woofer. Yeah, 4 pounds  At $191 list price each, they anit cheap.
The only concern I would have is the 5WS putting back pressure of the other 5" driver and causing some distortion. I know this happens when some people with subs in their trunk also have speakers in the rear deck.
If you want killer bass up front, Focal also makes a 3 way system with a 10" woofer and yet another 3 way with a 11" woofer. Put the woofer in the door and the mid and tweet in the kicks. That would be super sweet
