I am about to replace the HU in my 94 coupe, it has the cassette non-Bose (UM6) and I want (need) a new HU.
I plan on installing a double din or a single din with a pocket, but I really like the look of the Double din...
What do I need to replace it?
Do I need to rewire it like I would the Bose?
What speakers can I add as direct replacements?
I have heard that there is something odd about the connection to the power antenna and the antenna cable...
I am somewhat of a novice at this so I could use any and all help!
I'm still trying to figure out the hook up on my '95 but I know about the speakers. The fronts are 4x6 and the rears are 6x9. I'm not real up on the changes each year so I don't know if '94s have speakers in the dash or doors.
I plan to have the radio done tonight so I can answer any new questions you may have about that tomorrow hopefully.
I had the same non-Bose deck in my 93. I ended up having Circuit City put my HU in. I had to walk them through some of it, so this is what I can tell you...
1. As for the speakers, front 4x6 and rears 6x9 as stated above. I replaced the fronts with Polk Audio Pro Series 4x6's and the rear with JBL Pro Series 6x9's.
2. You do not need to change anything with the wiring to make it like a Bose system. In fact, they (Bose owners) need to make their's like ours.
3. You will need to get an extension for your antenna and extend the antenna motor wire to run to behind the dash. If you are replacing the speakers at the same time as installing a new HU, I would just run new speaker wires (16 gauge or so, instead of the factory 22 gauge zip wire). Otherwise, you will need to extend the speaker wires from the control unit in the passenger side storage compartment.
4. The mounting kit is difficult to find. I did a search and found a couple of places that carried it for our Vettes. There are plastic ones with pockets, double din ones, and a metal one without a pocket (I have this one in mine). The metal one looks really nice.
5. Crutchfield and other companies sell the wiring harness for the rear of the HU. Don't get the GM one, you need the Corvette one. The radios are different.
6. There is some cutting that needs to be done behind the HU. Just look to see exactly what needs to be cut, don't cut more than you need to. This is the part I didn't want to do and figured if Circuit City screwed up, they would be buying a new dash and having the dealer install it. :D
Hope this helps you out.
Thanks for the help!
When running the speaker wire, do you have to run it all the way from the HU along with the antenna wire or can/should I tie in at the reciever box location behind the pass seat? Is there a benifit one way or the other?
I do have manual AC controls, do I need to add the resisters in to fix the SYS light from flashing?
I just ordered a JVC-KWXC770 Double DIN to replace the HU and two JBL Power P-9632 6"x9"s for the rear and two JBL GTO6425 4"x6"s for the front.
I am not sure I wand to add an amp at this time but the HU puts out 40w X 4 so I should be okay.
By the way, those 4 X 6's in the front aren't best size for good sound. Actually, 5.25's will fit in the same baffles without much effort. That's what I have in my 95. And, in the back the openings are not a standard 6 X 9 size.
I guess one of my posts is missing so I will repost...
This last weekend I finished about half of the install.
I used the carcass of the old non-Bose unit that was trashed to make brackets and for the wiring harness.
The wiring is a bear since there are so many features split between the receiver unit and the head unit but I think I got all the right connections. I even went ahead and wired in the 2 1k ohm resisters in to the Dimmer circuits so I should not have the SYS error problem.
This is a pic of the first dry run to see if the bezel would fit.
I tried to install all of the new speakers but ran into a little trouble...
The front 4X6s went in perfect, even used the same holes :)
The rears were a different story, once the old speakers were out I put one of the new ones in it's place and at first I was thinking it was perfect but it turns out the hole is too large and the mounting holes in the speaker don't reach over the plastic so I will have to make a mounting bracket for them.
For now I just left the old non-Bose speakers in there and they sound okay till I get the new ones in.
