has anyone replced only HU and kept factory speakers?

My cd player is shot. I want to replace it, maybe with dvd and XM capability etc. but not ready to replace speakers. Has anyone replaced only the HU? Did it sound at least as good as the factory crap? If so, which adapter(s) were required? ANy recommendation on a HU? Otherwise, I was thinking of just adding aftermarket FM cd changer to factory unit and forget about it ...

If you are okay with the sound of the factory stereo, a aftermarket CD changer though the radio's ant is somewhat easy and not very expensive.
I even happen to have a 99% new one for sale, IM if interested.
If you are unhappy with the sound, I don't recommend researching adaptors and such for the factory speakers, just go ahead and upgrade the speakers now with a new head unit and not waste money on the adaptors.
