Its impossible to intall any kind of aftermarket stereo in my 91 coupe. The headunit doesn't fit at all, there is no room inside the dash, there are no mounting plates for the headunit either. I can't get the headunit to fit no matter what I do. How has anyone put in a headunit in there dash on the early 90's style dash? Im really frustrated and almost about to call it quits on the car. Can anyone please help. :banghead:
Re: It is impossible to install a stereo in my 91! (Red91Vette)
Did you get the Metra dash install kit? I used that to install my Alpine HU a while ago. THe HU wouldn't fit all the way in with the wires, so I ended up cutting some of the plastic behind where the HU goes. Watch out for the yellow connector clipped onto the plastic though. It will just slide off, but leave a small piece of plastic to clip it back onto if you cut the plastic. I think it goes to the airbag since it's yellow.
This is a single din. I'm not sure about any others, but the Metra install kit will work for all, it says. The kit is new, so most shops won't know about it if they are using the 02 catalog. I'll try to find the link I bought the kit from.

No I didn't use that kit, I heard about it, but I heard you had to make a custom box and cut the dash up a bit to get everything to fit. Which is what i've done, but its hard getting everything to fit right and lined up, there is no room!

I used a metal mount kit(think it was the metra, don't remember), I have an Alpine 7995 Headunit and a Zapco sub controller in my dash, the Zapco Line Driver is in the Passenger Bolster. Just be patient and take your time, you will be amazed what you can stuff in there!
Re: It is impossible to install a stereo in my 91! (Dougs 90)
You don't have to use that kit.... I have a double din Kenwood in my '92 with no cutting anything.... I only had to custom make the brace in the back....the install was easy. I'll take pictures when I get home :steering:
Re: It is impossible to install a stereo in my 91! (KouKou)
Well I got a mounting kit for my car, I hope you don't have to reuse your old headunit mounting brackets, the ones that came with the bose stereo? I don't think I have those anymore! How could you fit a double din without trimming the dash bezel trim piece? It doesn't fit width wise? Also when I played my head unit in the dash(I did a half butt job of installing it just to hear what my new speakers sounded like) the headunit got really hot, most likely because there is no room back there and there are a lot of wires all contained inside my dash? I got a small cooling fan which I am going to try to mount back there somehow, hopefully that will solve my problems. I think I ned new alternator too, my volts drop when im at idle, des anyone know where you can buy a good high amp alternator? Preferably a 140 amp? Thanks.
Re: It is impossible to install a stereo in my 91! (Red91Vette)
I made custom brackets out of sheet metal. The decks have threaded holes on their sides so I used screws to attach the brackets to the decks.
There is a plastic piece in the back of the radio cavity which I cut out for more depth. However I didn't have to cut the dash trim piece. My deck did have a bezel around the removable faceplate which I had to take off so the face would fit through the dash trim. The body of the deck would NOT fit through the hole.
