ok i have a 76 corvette w/ an aftermarket radio installed by the previous owner, it is one of those digital but semi orgional looking ones. it has 4 channels so i have rear speakers too, after market. now the first problem is that when i turn the car off i loose all presets, keep in mind i did not wire this. if i turn off the radio and keep the car running that is not a problem. the second problem is that when i turn on the radio it doesnt come on right away. it can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minuties to turn on, but the little lights come on right away, the ones that iluminate the buttons. and this happens everytime i turn on the radio, not just the first time.
any help would be appriceated on this, keep in mind i did not instakll this, nor have i removed it to look at the wireing yet, i wouldnt know what im looking at. I think they might have gotten a live wire, jusyt not the right wire.

not sure about problem 2, but I know how to fix problems 1 :D
the HU should have a constant power wire and a switched power wire. Whoever installed it put the constant or both power wires connected to your igniton. The constant power wire is for holding your presets and stuff, the switched power goes to the ignition to turn the unit on and off when you turn the car on and off.
Fix a little bit of the wiring and you'll be set. Also your second problem might be caused by the screwed up wiring job, so you might be able to fix both problems in one shot.
Re: after market radio in 76, 2 odd problems (pillowmeto)
if im not moistaken the orginal radio had no presets that would be saved by a constatnt power wire, they were a button you pressed to move the slider neddle to a certian spot. so if it had no need for one then would it have one. im just thinking i might not have a constatnt power wire to pluginto the back of the radio, and only a ignition wire. so how would i install one in my car, and wetal wuff have you put a radio in your 78, if so how did you do that install, did you need to make a constant power wire for it.

You'll need to check the back of your HU to see what wires it does have...
When I installed my pioneer I needed to run all the wires, as there was already a single din radio in it, but the wiring was all hacked up.
Making the wires yourself is easy. Just find a constant on 12v souce and tap it. then find a 12v source that switiches with the ignition and tap it. Might want to check the rest of the wires while you're in there as well.
