Default aftermarket stereo and SYS warning

I have read and saved a past topic on installing 2 resistors to trick the car into thinking it still has the bose system installed and avoid the sys warning. Does anyone know if this applies to a 93, and what would happen if I fused the stereo direct to the battery and didn't use the power to the old bose?

The SYS problem is related to the dimming circuit so I would think that as long as you patch that up you can power your aftermarket unit any way you want and still be rid of the SYS problem.

Just for those that might have missed it, I posted this fix on the forum back in 1999:

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new stereo, he will need to do the following:

1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 Watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2-pack for 29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car.)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

I just had a new stereo installed about 6 weeks ago. Driving home I had the flashing SYS light the entire way home. I went to Radio Shack and bought the resistors (that part number has been out of use for 10 years it is now 271-1118)....

The next day I was headed back up to the stereo installer to have them do the resistor fix when I noticed I had no Sys light flashing at all.

So I decided to hold off on the "fix" and see if the flashing SYS light ever came back....6 weeks and it has not come back.

The same thing happened to another guy on here.....flashing SYS light after stereo install and then it disappeared....

There was a TSB from GM about this issue:

The resistors certainly won't hurt anything so if you are worried go ahead and put them in when you do the install.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will put them in to save another dismantle. Stereo booked in Mon morning after 12 months of deliberation! :)
